Aleutians Scenery

btw forgot to mention - all I've done is to add a texture folder for west & east aleutians scenery, so the rest of the world will still look as it should ...

You can put in this texture folder a.e an entire Dick's automn ,winter or Hwinter set to play with the landclasses with some more appropriate colors .
The Dick's masks + a good lanclass will already prepare the terrain for future projects to make thinned handly the more interesting islands from the 300 that are in the Aleoutians :applause:

I think I have the tundra sorted. I kinda like the patchy snow, but maybe I'll do a version without it ...

What do you think?

Finally!

UT, both look fabulous!! How about both? Different seasons, perhaps? Summer, early winter?

By the by, I finally got it!....Voila!

Problem for me was the LOD5.....loaded it through the scenery library and that didn't work at all. Worked perfect in 'world'.

I know the war up there went on for at least a year so all would suit, yes?

My apologies to you and Rhumba. I am sooo-o-o-ooo relieved that I finally got this right. Super!

Cheers!

Should Rhumbaflappy's new Aleutian scenery/mesh be used in conjunction with his recent LOD5/7/8 mesh and watermasks?
I am also wondering if his older coastal flattens and water files should still be used, not only for the Aleutians, but in general.

Thanks, Kevin

I had assumed Rhumbas new Aleutians was for his new LOD 5/ 7/ 8 world. Haven't tried them in an "old" install.

Not sure about the old coastal flattens & water files for elsewhere, but I seem to recall that as the LOD 5 files were added to the main scenedb/world/scenery folder, & they cover the whole world, keeping any of the "old" stuff will give strange looking results.

CFS2 Ehanced

Hi All. After buttin' ma wee head against the door post for a while have finally got things done correctly.....took some doin'.

I've added the CFS2 enhanced and now she looks right!

According to Rhumba, the watermasks are not needed because they're already built in to either the new DEM8 or his Aleutians scenery or both(I'm not sure which). I tried installing them along with everything else and it didn't seem to work, but at that stage NOTHING werked!!.......failed to read the bluidy instructions!.....so maybe they do but I'm pretty sure they're not needed.

With the DEM5, 7 & 8 properly installed plus DEM4km and Rhumba's new Aleutians east and west, and finally the CFS2 enhanced then the New Japan Airfields by Xavier, it all comes together as far as it can get at this point.......bear in mind that I used a clean install for this.....and it looks bluidy terrific! Thanks to Rhumba and Uncle TGT, DVSlats, and Xavier.

I for one, am very pleased to see this theatre improved at last.

Cheers!

Absolutely Fabulous....

that he's brought the area so much to life! His treatment of the Eastern Aleutians Tundra is outstanding! I could do with some talent, boy!

That is looking great, i have been collecting original sources to do some campaigns for the Aleutians as it was a very interesting part of the war and little known.....and these improved scenery fixes will be a must. Those tundra textures are great, can you tell us how to do that UncleTi if and when you have time? I have to find the install the DEMs first, and have to carve out time for that first.thanks again for this info and work.

incidentally those clear weather shots which are beautiful occured maybe three days a year on Attu and Kiska according to the sources i have...most of the rest of the time it was cloudy, foggy and almost always blowing a gale :)

Thousand miles of Hell....

CG, If you haven't and you're thinking seriously of doing a campaign, you might consider reading 'The Thousand Mile War'.....not sure of the complete title but if you're interested, I can find it for you. The book is excellent and describes all aspects of the campaign, including weather.

Cheers!

:redface:OK, here's an outline of the method I've developed.

First, get a hold of Martin's DXTbmp & BMP2000 progs. Then, use a decent graphics editor that'll allow you to work with layers - I use Paint Shop Pro 8. Also a good idea to get Pen32win CFS 2 Pactex texture guide & Sanders G2K tutorial file - they provide a good guide as to the texture filename you''ll want to rework/ replace.

It's already apparent from my earlier work that the FSX terrain bmps that people such as Aime Leclerc have made freeley available are the starting point for much of the work. Not always, but most of the time.

I find some suitable startpoint bmps by viewing these files in DXTbmp (as normal bmps, NOT extended bmps). Once I find something that might be useful, I save as 24 bit bmp from DXTbmp. These are large files 1024 x 1024 bmps.

Now CFS 2 terrain uses FS2000/2002 (FS70) extended bmps. These max out as 256 x 256 bmp size, & the pallette of (8 bit) colours also carries any transparency information. Big difference.

Using PSP8, I fiddle & tweak things until I have something that will still look good at 256 x 256 - there's a lot of to & fro here, some of the FSX bmps are just too busy & when you reduce the image size, it just doesn't look good in game.

Saving as a 256 x 256 bmp, I then format so it will show in CFS 2 using BMP2000.
First, load up a terrain bmp from CFS 2 that uses a similar colour pallette to the one you want to use (it doesn't always need to be the same filename you trying to replace).

Using the merge image button, navigate to the 256 bmp you created using PSP & BMP2000 will create the image set. Choose to save extended image & save SOMEWHERE DIFFERENT TO THE CFS 2 folder you grabbed the original from, simply naming as the file name you want to replace in the game.

Make sure you have a back up of CFS 2/ TEXTURE & CFS 2/ SCENEDB/ WORLD/ TEXTURE folders. Now you can find your new texture, copy & paste it into CFS 2/ TEXTURE & CFS 2/ SCENEDB/ WORLD/ TEXTURE folders, allowing it to overwrite the textures already there.

Fire up CFS 2 & check out how it looks.

Simples!:isadizzy:

For custom lines, the initial work is basically the same. THe difference is to get a workable line transparency. I haven't found anything to short circuit a painstaking colour by colour reworking of the transparency in BMP2000, & there's an awful lot of trial & error doing that!!!:monkies:

Oh, I shoulda known something that looks that fine, was not going to be easy! I stil look at those photos everyday. REALLY GREAT, Uncle T!:salute::ernae:

MY TWO CENTS WORTH......

Having already added DVSlat's CFS2 Enhanced Textures, I just downloaded and installed UT's terrific snow textures and took a spin around Fort Glenn, The Aleutians. Wowsers!

This area is approximately at: N53 23.16, W167 51.32 give or take 20-30 miles. I set up a quick little fighter sweep in Mission Builder for this, just to have a looksee.....Weather; 3/8 scattered Cumulus, ceiling 8000 feet, visibility 15 miles. I'm flying at about 5000 feet.

Now, your talking! Really looks great! Hey, Alpha, I have not got to any of this yet, did you find out how to "turn the snow on"? I think I will make a new install for this. I think Canadians flew on something like 88 mission? I believe a fella could fly almost every kind of mission up there.:salute::ernae:

I spent some time on Amchitka in the '80s, twice.
the term "if you don't like the weather, wait a minute"
must have originated there.
seriously, the weather could and would change
from blowing snowing to crystal clear calm
in a matter of minutes.

when not working, I did a lot of tramping around
checking out the area.
I even picked up the nickname Tundra Man.
(the place was full of comedians)
there were Aleut sites, WWII sites and AEC sites.
(there were 3 underground nuclear test in the '70s)
heck, there was a dump with P-38 parts.
there is a huge complex of runways and pads,
built for B-29s that were going to hit Japan,
but it was never used.

sorry, I could go on for hours.
the place fascinates me.

BTW, the book is called
"The Thousand Mile War"
by Brian Garfield
I highly recommend it to anyone interested
in what those poor bastards had to endure.
