What I'm working on...

Update

I finished missions 13, 14 and 15 tonight. They are similar to 10, 11 and 12 in that the Saratoga and Princeton are again attacking Rabaul, but from further away to the southeast and in bad weather. The number of US aircraft is almost half of those in the previous missions (the second wave was called back due to the weather), which means there are less friendlies to "soak off" the Japanese planes and flak.

On to Tarawa!

I'm almost finished with mission 16 - the raid on Nauru on 19 November 1943. The Sara returns to the states for overhaul and is out of action for almost a year. When she returns, she goes to the Indian Ocean for a spell, working with the British there. I'll start work on those missions soon.

Yes I am Rick... I finished 16, 17 and 18 - the F6F, TBF and SBD striked on Nauru. Looking at the Saratoga history I have to do a couple of missions for Eniwetok before she sails into the Indian Ocean:

"...It was not long before the Navy called on Sara to assemble with two light carriers, the USS Langley (CVL-27) and USS Princeton (CVL-23), to provide a strong airpower force towards the Marshall Islands. This carrier force had 180 aircraft combined and struck the islands of Wotie and Taroa for 72 hours and then attacked the main island of Eniwetok for five more days ultimately covering the beach landings on January 17th . The Marines had some rough going of it so the carrier force flew CAP (Combat Air Patrol) until February 28th. "

Finished missions 19 and 20

The attacks on Eniwetok atoll went on for about a week, to include covering the landings. I only did 2 missions of the first wave attacks on Engebi.

Now I'm off to the Indian Ocean...

A Question For You All

I finished the attack on Sabang and am moving on to the attack on Surabaya, Java on May 17 1944.

Has anyone done a GSL or layout for this city/base? I thought I'd ask before I start to build one from scratch.

Thanks

Good gosh, man, this is turning into a real block buster! I wish I could help ya, but you're light years ahead of me. Sounds like it's gonna be another classic must have! Thanks, big guy, you've put a lot into this.:salute::ernae:

Hearing no suggestions, I found and installed XavierB's excellent Java GSL. It has a GsL that does a great job of recreating the port of Surabaya. I placed and infrastructure airfield nearby along with hangars, towers etc. I took the my layout and created a GSL gob of it. I didn't change XavierB's layout.

I built and finished 2 strike missions - 24 and 25 - on the layouts described above, adding some parked planes, AA guns and docked ships.

This should finish the Saratoga's Indian Ocean campaign. She returned to the tates for overhaul and later returned to Pearl to train pilots in night operations. She returned to combat in in late January 45 to join the Enterprise in night ops at Iwo Jima.

I'm taking a short break... :wavey:

OKay, I'm getting back to work!

I have been trying to find inbfo about the Saratoga and Enterprise night strikes on Japanese airbases near Tokyo on 16 and 17 Feb 1945. I have been unable to find anything that gives me target locations. exact ship locations or strike force compositions. I may have to "fudge" those. :) I want to build Two strikes and two CAP missions for the Sara and them do the mission where she was hit by bombs and Kamikazes on her way to Iwo Jima. Is there a Kamikaze download somewhere?

I've got 4 of my last 5 missions done - 2 night strikes and a night CAP mission off the coast of Japan. For the strikes, there was very little information on the Saratoga so I picked 3 bases near Tokyo and made up the strike force composition to my own taste. The NCAP mission is a "what if" scenario.

Next I'll do the Sara's last WW2 engagement where she was hit by Kamikazes and bombs enrote to Iwo Jima. I'll try to get it done this weekend.

Next week I'll fly the photo recon missions and take the target photos and fix them up.

Sounds like it's almost TA-DA! Hope you had a great time with this one. This is your biggest one yet. I'll send ya a virtual bottle of champagne to launch her with! Will this be a Christmas gift for the boys? Thanks in advance, GB, for what I know will be a great, well done job!:salute::ernae:

Pen32Win:

I noticed in the example that your kamikazes were at 7500 feet when you created the action "attack with bombs" must they be that high at the attack point? I'd like to set them at 500. :salute:

Mission 28 is almost complete....

SW07,

When Pen32win designed the Kamikazes he used the bomb payload to script the AI attack profile. The bomb release triggers an engine fire & the plane goes "ballistic".
What you need for the low level kamikaze attack is a torpedo payload, so the AI follows the correct attack profile. I experimented a while ago but had mixed success (with larger a/c like the Ki-49 Helen).

Maybe one of the weapon experts could help with a lighweight torpedo payload for use as a kamikaze "payload".

Requirements:-
Small size & weight (so a zero can carry one)
high speed (not sure if all CFS 2 torps use the same speed) - you want to have the torp arrive at the same time as the "engine fire" aircraft.

You might try the B25 skipbomb he developed, that might do the job ...

Almost Done

I flew the recon missions and took overhead screenshots of the target areas. I greyscaled them, marked the targets and resized them for uploading to the mission briefings.

Next I have to fly each mission and do final editing... I hope Pen32Win gives me a reply to my altitude question soon.

Whew! :wiggle:
