Opinions on remote data storage

We are thinking of setting up remote backup but don't know much about it. I had it when I worked in the corporate world but it was all taken care of by the company. For home/private use are there some good systems out there? So far I looked at IDrive and Mozy, both about $6.00 per month.
 
Iomega Tape drive and backup..........

I am stuck in the late 1990's..............

I still think Iomega tape drives are really cool............

so don't listen to me..................
 
I don't like the idea of my files being kept on some server that I don't know where it is, who is monitoring it. I prefer to use my own back up system....external HD, DVD archiving. Granted, this still leaves the files at risk of being lost due to fire/flood/thermo-nuclear attack/alien invasion and the like...but I know that no one outside of my house is going to be accessing the pictures that were taken on our wedding night...and I would be highly embarrassed if pics of me wearing nothing but a pair of diver's fins and a sombrero were to end up on the internet.

Get a dual drive enclosure.....

...got me an enclosure that handles 2 drives ...

then a couple of 1 TB hard drives. I back my computers up to one of the drives, then robocopy that drive to the second drive. then I take the second drive to my in-laws house in case the worst happens to my house......


works good, lasts a long time (i hope)
 
I have about 3 TB's of storage and anything I really want to keep copied on a couple of seperate hard drives.I have hundreds of CFS 2 aircraft stored and rarely even play the game anymore.

For the cost of a 500 gig or 1 TB hard drive I would store my data myself,if the remote server crashes you will be SOL.

Purchase your self a external drive that can do both USB and eSATA connections. If you run out of space buy another one.
 
We have used SugarSync for about a year now, and we are quite happy with it. We did pay some fee (I don't remember what) to get more storage. Files are safe, and I can download a file from any machine to any other machine. I like it.
 
I have my mini white HD adapter boxes with the internal HD 'slot' on the tops, that I just plug a HD into (full size internal drive) and it links right into the box, which is linked into my computer via a USB. I can turn it off, or leave it on all the time and the computer manages its on time. I have FS9 and FSX and XP-10 on one, and all my backups on another and its a dual slot, so I also have the Apple backup on that one as well, (2 1TB drives, 3 total). All... . on the desk, in the corner, behind the antique Bose speaker (gateway era) that still works perfectly, believe it or not...
 
I use Mozy. It's a fantastic service, I've never had a problem with it and it's nice and unobtrusive. I'd never run a system without it now. I pay for the unlimited scheme which is a fixed yearly price (about $50) and no limits on space.

Off-site backup solutions really are the only true way to protect yourself. Whilst it's all well and good backing up to external hard drives to protect against data corruption and system failures it won't help you very much when you consider things like theft and fire.
 
Ditto Chris H's comment. I now use Acronis online backup because it allows me to back up my OS as well and use it on another system if I have a catastrophic failure. It isn't free like Mozy though! I like Mozy as well-zero problems with it. I had the Physicians Network set up the same way.
 
Blu-ray?

50 Gb data storage for dual layer media. $80 for the internal drive, and a 10-pack of disks for about $90.

Another alternative to online storage would be Microsoft's SkyDrive... free 25Gb for each valid email address ( Windows Live logon ).

Good comments. The reasons for remote in this case can't be addressed with a simple external. My daughter is going abroad and considering the remote thing because anything she does on her laptop can then be saved overnight. It's going to be daily school as well as related work things for four months. If she drags around an external, it would have just as much chance of being stolen, lost, etc as her computer. Beyond that time frame we may or may not continue to use remote backup. Otherwise I'm with the consensus of secondary close-by drives for saving things.

Me.com has some nice features. If she has an Apple, its awesome as it interacts with all of your programs and friends lists, synching them automatically, even uploading important docs automatically to sync with iPhone, iPad, computers, backup, etc..
 
I usually consider myself pretty savvy about computers, but I haven't yet figured out how to save files from my HD's to DVD's. Well, let's say I can copy the files successfully but then it looks like I've filled up the entire DVD when I've only copied like 45MB in one shot. If anybody could direct me to a tutorial or do a walk-through with me via PM it would be most appreciated.
 
Getting close to departure time. We have not found out how much Mosey costs yet. Can't seem to find clear info about options and costs. Same for Acronis. We are looking for big bytes of storage, 102GB at least. What about Carbonite?

The prices have just changed slightly for Mozy, as of 2011 I'll be paying $109.89 for 125GB storage each on 3 PC's.
 
Good thread. I have been burned by a couple of HD and SD crashes. I hate Iomega with a passion. 2 portable SD's crash in 1 year just out of warranty and they wanted to charge me for recovering the data. I'm going to follow up on some of the suggestions here. I have burned a good bit of data to DVD & CDR's the last couple of years but that is a pain to be sure.
 
With the price of External HD's very reasonable I actually have 2 1Tb drives for each of my 8 Data/Application servers. Drive 1 is on-line for a week and then it goes in the fire safe and is replaced by Drive 2 for a week and so on. I can keep 30 Days of daily back-ups with no problem.

I have had some problems with the Iomega's dropping dead too but have had very good results with the Verbatim Drives. I have also had good results with CMS.
 
Since I only store media and downloaded material on my external HD, I only use a 1 TB USB 2.0 plug-in. Some of the newer external HDs have (with up to 1 TB, albeit costly) SATA plugs, which means one can download programs to them and operate them as well as from an internal SATA HDs.
