As to the engine, the R2800 was almost always operated in one of the ranges of auto mixture, Auto Rich used for high power and Auto Lean for cruise etc. The reason for a richer mixture at high power was internal cooling, the evaporation of the extra fuel and the greater mass flow out the pipes carried a lot of heat away. Heat dissapation was always the real limit on power these engines could produce.

Leaning the mixture manually (possible but seldom used) did not affect the engine RPM while operating in the constant speed range of the prop, which is anything above about 1500 RPM, or just about any time in flight. The mixture does affect the CHT and EGT, an effect we used for the Uvier DC2 X.
