• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

Goodbye to hard drives?

Once someone else controls all of your data they will be able to charge you for it forever.

The whole concept of this type of computing will not fly with me.

I don't like this either. This is just another excuse for them to claim we buy a lisence to use X software instead of owning it. This certaintly seems to be the trend as of late with digital media.

Technology takes the stand. Or tries. Sounds to me like something derived from all the geeks that thrive on the latest. Ipad, Ipod, Ebook readers and cell phones that do everything but cook your dinner. In general, people are lazy and want to be catered too.

Myself, I don't see this happening unless you set yourself up for it as the physical hardware will never go away. Not in my lifetime. I see this as another form of control that most haven't seen going on for many years because they're too sucked in to the glitz to realize it. Something to think about is the fact that if you have a cell phone of the newer types, you're being watched via satellite and likely being listened in on your private conversations too boot

It would certainly make any laptop completely useless in areas without any sort of connectivity, of which there are still far too many... :monkies:

Last year Facebook said they owned all of the pictures that people uploaded to their accounts. The vacation and travel shots, parties, holidays, ect that you put in your photo album on Facebook....all owned by Facebook. I'm not sure if Facebook ever retracted that revelation, but I can see Google pulling the same crap.

I agree. Have you tried to download something to your phone when you are NOT on the 3G network? Welcome to cloud computing.

The approach to this assumes that most people spend most of their computer time on line. I know that most of my computer time is off line. I don't fly my sim on line, I don't tweak panels, sound packs and effects on line. I don't do skins on line. I don't play my PC based games on line. 90% of my computer time I don't even need internet for...other than research on skins perhaps.

I'm thinking that the ba$tard$ will have to pry my hard drive out of my cold dead hands. I've been using an aircard for years and the data flow mostly sucks unless you're right under a transponder tower for your service provider. Also, I'm thinking the big cloud provider will be cyber attack vulnerable and really how secure is your data in a "cloud"

“Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men? The Shadow knows, ha ha ha…”
The shadow who aids the forces of law and order is in reality Lamont Cranston; wealthy young man about town. Years ago in the Orient, Cranston learned the strange and mysterious secret; the hypnotic power to cloud men’s minds so they can not see him. Cranston’s friend and companion, the lovely Margo Lane, is the only person who knows to whom the voice of the invisible shadow belongs.

And remember, “The weed of crime bears bitter fruit. Crime does not pay…The Shadow knows!”

not a hope in hell. Theres no way anybody who works with personal info (say business documents, 3d work on the latest blockbuster, tomorrows magazine etc) will ever upload them to someone elses "cloud", Maybe if they had their own massive storage etc but i doubt it. Also, what if the people running the servers just say "F*** it" and turn em off and stop doing it, your screwed well and truley.

I wish someone would just turn off ALL the ISPs, signal towers and links to saterlites for 24hrs and just knock people back into sense.

While there at it, turn off all power for that allotted time. Let's see how many people freak out because their coffee makers, microwaves, lights and everyday conveniences all stop!!!

Yeah right!!

not to mention, if you dont have internet service or it is crappy, you are FUBAR

this is somewhat surprising to me...
i thought we would all have a flash-memory hard drive by now

Naw, I ain't gonna buy that!

But good riddance to Hard Drives, they will soon, already are in fact, being replaced by solid state Hard Drives, much like your little media cards only larger. As soon as they can get solid state HD media in the 500 GB size for a reasonable price, moving Hard Drives will be a thing of the past.

And that would achieve what exactly?

People going "Woah, all this technological progress is creepy. Let's go back to the 1970s!"?

Let everyone else decide for him/herself what they want to do and what not.
Should it kick them in the butt...well, they knew the risks.

Here, here. I'm not sharing my porn with anyone!
