OT: The Last flight of the UK's Harriers

BUMMER.. I like the Harrier very much..

Bummer and now No aircraft carrier also..
I don't know what is happening Over There..
But I am sorry to know that the UK has had to do these things..

:salute: :salute: :salute: :salute:
Goodbye to the Harriers..

I was very saddened to hear this too today. The Harrier has been my favourite 'modern' combat aircraft for years. It has a perfect pedigree and a direct lineage back to the Hawker aircraft before the war.

:salute:

Yes it must the last all British combat aircraft left.

Honestly Owen, you want to hear some of the stuff that is being suggested. In the Autumn there was open debate in the media about disbanding the RAF and letting the Royal Navy take over this role. Lots of shortsighted talk with too much focus on the Afganistan role. Trouble is, the hardware is sooo expensive now, to build and to run.

Our government is seeking drastic measures to cut the deficit, these wars are draining our economy as well. Congress still has not approved a FY11 budget and there is talk of maintaining the continuing resolution well into this year. Everyone seems to be in lean time right now.

What a bummer for a beaut niche aircraft and its crews. New Zealand scrapped its entire fleet of fixed wing fighter aircraft, well it must be over a decade ago now. At least NZ has Australia in the way as its first line of defence, plus a wonderful array of WWII fighter planes in Wanaka if the bad guys ever get past Australia.

Another iconic British military aircraft gone!

And another example of thinking like politicians, not government. So we'll have two carriers and no aircraft, instead of one carrier and a proven, versatile, genuinely useful aircraft that's already in service to fly off it.

Don't get me started... :a1451:

So we'll have two carriers and no aircraft, instead of one

Have just woken up to the news this morning that it'll only be one carrier, HMS Ocean. :(
They're also scrapping the 3 Type 22 Frigates.

Pity. Deja Vu, seen this progressive course of disarmament direction post WWI.

ChuclKe Alain. Fox News Channel delivers the news likewise. Check out Megyn Kelly's GQ spread.

Debate or not debate

I'm not chuclking at 100%, Caroline Wyatt looks cute to me, she doesn't need to spread as Megyn Kelly. :icon_lol: I'm just joking a bit...
How did you see a progressive course of disarmament before the end of the cold war ?
Now the defence options have change of face but there are still too much nuclear weapons...

Sometimes I really wonder how we ever managed to rule half the flaming world... We'd be hard-put to defend ourselves against Luxembourg if they decided to get stroppy. And it's no use depending on the French, whatever the experts say - when push comes to shove, the French will defend their own interests - which are not necessarily ours. We had a prime example of that over Iraq II, and everybody in government at least appears to have forgotten. Not to mention the fact that the Argies are getting a bit excited again...

Now the Typhoon has ground-attack capability, wouldn't it be better to chop a few Tornadoes instead and keep the Harriers?
