F9F "What if" Royal Netherlands Navy...

What if.....The Netherlands Navy acquired the F9F as the attack fighter jet for the HRMS Karel Doorman (R 81, Colossus-class, CV), instead of the Hawker Seahawk in the late 50's.

It would probably have looked like this (initial paint):

Since you mention the Sea Hawk, you're obviously doing the grey/duck-egg-green scheme as well ?.. To my knowledge there have never been dark blue MLD Sea Hawks ?....

If you do the grey/ duck-egg-green scheme it's just small step to expand your 'what if..' project to the Royal Navy as well as the German Navy.. :cool:

An FSX Sea Hawk in this kind of fashion would be wonderful, wouldn't it !

The next project is indeed the grey & duck-egg green paint (took me a while to sample the correct colors). Already started background study regarding German and British variants as well.

Great looking paints, Warrant:applause:. FYI, the paint scheme isn't "British" but NATO-prescribed. As you undoubtedly know e.g. the MLD-Trackers were painted in a similar scheme.

What about that typical red nose tip and streak as seen on the MLD Sea Hawks ? Wouldn't you think that the number on the nose could be quite a bit bigger ?

Thanks again for the comments. The bird is pretty much done. Enlarged the nose-numbers just a bit, but kept it in proportion. No orange-red nose tip and streak, since there is no use for it (it was there to warn ground crew for that nice hole in the nose of the Hawker Seahawk). Did a lot of remodelling, repositioning and recoloring the decals, as well as a fix for a paint anomaly with the wing fuel tanks. I also gave the pilot a more white-ish helmet.

Repaints so far:

1) An initial dark blue livery, VSQ860, CV R81 Karel Doorman
2) The late 50-ies Grey and duck-egg green livery, VSQ860, CV R81 Karel Doorman
3) Late 50-ies Grey and duck-egg green livery, VSQ3, NAS Valkenburg

Awaiting permission from Vertigo to release the repaints.

Ah,Ok, so it had a function.. Always thought it was just decoration.. But the Dutch are indeed not exactly known for joyeux deco's on their aircraft, are they.. 'doe maar gewoon dan doe je al gek genoeg'. :)

Any idea what it was for ?... Extra air intake ?...

Funny you should mention that. It is not the armed forces but the government that prevents "artistic improvements" of aircraft. Since we have (and had for a while now) more politicians then combat aircraft in The Netherlands, all looking at our armed forces through magnifying glasses (and will not hold back to make a big thing out of anything), all vehicles, planes and ships are quite uniform in paint and art. Besides a name or small comic sign nothing really special happenes with the equipments paint (except some exclusions like Tiger meet or display aircraft or tanks). Commanders are simply not willing to explain "artistic expressions" to members of parliament, since quite a few of these politicians are not very comfortable with having (large) armed forces anyway. This is how i personally experience(d) this.
