Opinions on remote data storage

I have a buddy that has a rack of hard drives that automatically back up each other every day. 6 hard drives I think. I can find out more details if anyone is interested.

It is basically his personal file server. He keeps all his photos and music on them.
 
Externals have the clear advantages, if they are within reach. She needs something that will be at the end of an e-mail server. We settled on Acronis for about $5/month for 250GB space. The first upload is in progress and will take anywhere from 7 to 50 hrs, depending on server loads and such. We believe subsequent uploads will only be for accessed or new files. We hope.

Have you considered supplementing your backup's by burning data to Bluray? I use 25GB disks...but 50GB are widely available too.
Hard drives, both internal and external, are cheap these days. I picked up a couple 2TB drives last week for €150 in order to consolidate all of my data for my htpc/networked media center. I'm getting to the stage where a networked server(s) will probably suit me better as I've 4 pc's and several notebooks to contend with (with total data around 10TB) plus about 6TB of external drives.
 
Again, she really wants remote storage in case of theft or damage. If the first upload ever finishes I think we'll be OK.

Here is another question. Laptop power converters. I assume Ireland is DC and we have a travel converter but will have to use a 3 prong adapter. Loss of the ground shouldn't cause problems in normal use right?

It'll work fine...most if not all notebook adapters will work fine on 110/220v and the plug adapter will be peachy. :)
 
So I get home and the wife sez, I think I found an adapter it says you need for the laptop to work but I don't know where to get it, YOU have a try. So I nail down the kid and ask what is it you are trying to do. She says my plug is 3-prong but the adapter is 2. I do my best slow head shake as I realize all the fuss is for a 0.98 cent 2-3 prong adapter, not some $50 Hamacher-Schlemmer gizmo. One minute later I had an adapter in my hand. Disaster avoided.
 
The best back up technologies are going to vary with your particular situation and what you're comfortable with. In the case you've described, to best support your daughter I believe you are looking at an off-site solution, but I'd augment it with a portable HDD. They are so cheap these days its almost criminal not to. Your data usually is more valuable than any single machine it resides on, so you have to give that due consideration.

The bottom line though, which you have obviously already comprehended, is that you MUST have something. Every day I deal with folks at my workplace who seem surprised when their drives die and I'm not going to commit my limited manpower to go resolve their self-created issue. I provide both on site and off site backup across the enterprise (and several enclaves) at a significant expense (which you, the U.S. taxpayer pay for), so I am not inclined to be sympathetic.

Personally, here at the house I use simple external HDD's, although I am considering an off-site solution as well. As was pointed out, if your data is real important to you, you will have it kept physically at another location in addition to a simple copy in the house. I think I have enough of my tax returns built up now that I'm going to have to make that investment.

I am thinking of buying another computer, and having the hard disk in my current computer cloned onto it. Do you folks think that one of these remote backup services may provide a DIY way of cloning the drive?
 
She has a pocket external for sure. I haven't heard yet if her first upload finished (20+ hrs so far). One of those little details never mentioned in the ads you know. Waiting to hear how the flight went.

Probably, if you're willing to pay the price. Alternatively, I just used WIN 7 transfer feature to move from one system to another, and it worked very well. I did the transfer over the network. Previously I had used the little special cable they sell, and that thing is around here somewhere, but I couldn't find it.
