Combat Sims

Strike Fighters

Awesome 60's/70's era sim, lots of Vietnam & Cold War stuff. Almost every major aircraft type, almost every major conflict has been modded. Huge aftermarket mod community - superb. http://www.thirdwire.com/ Don't let the simple website fool you. Here's the main mod site: http://community.combatsim.com/forum/29-strike-fighters/ and this one: http://column5.us/
.

I also flew the earlier Flanker SU-27 products - enjoyed them, though they had steep learning curves. There's a new version with an A-10, F-15 ... no time to dedicate to yet a third sim after FSX and CFS2 - but thought I'd mention.

Before that, I recall enjoying EF2000 ... weird huh? What's weirder, is that people are still flying it - go figure!

I believe the Falcon series is still going strong ... pushing a decade and a half ... goes to show some products have a strong following!

Probably lots more - just passing along the ones I know.

'Modern' combat sims? DCS's A-10 Warthog no doubt, also their Black Shark helo sim.

As for non-flying, I am waiting for the new Flashpoint to hit the (PC) streets ! Until then I 'make do' with the Call of Duty series...... ;-)

Depends what you're asking for. If you want dynamic campaign, you can fly Strike Fighters series, EECH, one of Falcon clones (Free Falcon is freeware, Allied Force is standalone, Open Falcon requires original Falcon 4).

If you don't mind scripted missions there is Flaming Cliffs 2, DCS: Black Shark, DCS: A-10C Warthog - Warthog is the most advanced combat aircraft simulation ever done on PC, and it just feels good. You'd need good processor though, my C2DE6400@2,13GHz is to weak.

There is another sim in the works - Jet Thunder - a Falklands/Malvinas conflict, Aerosoft was supposed to release first part in December, but there are no news since then.

I just installed ArmA2: British Armed Forces? That's modern... ;) (Hate the handling on the WMIK though - perfect Land Rover, it doesn't have a turning circle, it has a moderate sized turning planet!)

Flying wise, I don't use any of them. I only have 10 or so buttons on my stick and modern sims, whether they be Strike Fighters, a DCS sim or Falcon4, want ten times that for basic operation outside of "easy mode". Three for weapons select, one for cockpit modes modes, three or four for HUD modes, ten more for weapon modes, then you need to be able to select and lock targets on the MFDs (did I mention twenty buttons for MFD modes yet? No? Add them in then...), operate defensive systems, oh, and you might occasionally want to do flying-type things such as "landing gear", "flaps" and "trim".

I can't use the huge HOTAS systems with thirty buttons on, even if I could afford to buy one, so I have a choice of simple air combat sims or none. Right now, I'm opting for "none" and just shooting at things with an SA-80 or the Ma Deuce on the aforementioned WMIK. ;)

Anyone know of a good (i.e. NOT Op Flashpoint or ArmA based and not WoT, although I do love that game) tank sim?

Why make do when ARMA2 is there, which is of course the true OFP2.

As for modern combat sims, only sim sim sim is the Blackshark, A10 series from the creators of LOMAC etc.

Relaxed sim wise I really enjoy thirdwire series for easy jump in and fly fun, plus the aircraft graphics are really nice and theres a nice big range of types

I'll just add my vote for DCS A-10C WartHog,It's really incredible.....brings Combat simulation to a whole new level.:jump:

....quick clip of the A-10C GAU Avenger 30mm
