What's wrong with AVSIM?

SOH-CM-2022
Are they having a problem with their website? All I get is words, no pictures, & a warning about malwares. Anybody else having problems? It changed from what was good to a big mess Saturday nite.

Just tried, looks completely different and ask more detailes than it did before when trying to login!

If that is their new website...ugh!

Now it just looks like every other webpage, and it is harder to find familiar old features.

When will people learn if it ain't broke don't fix it?

I know, I know, upgraded features and all that bull.

Sorry, it ain't to my liking. I'm just a cranky old dinosaur.

Yeah, the redesigned their homepage. Not for the better, to be honest.
Please note, the url avsim.com no longer works, it needs to be www.avsim.com!
That explains the empty homepage you are seeing... (I experienced the same ;) )

Awful. Yuck.

I want to hit and scan quickly the "What's new" releases. This is much worse/slower. It was just fine before.

I don't really like the changes either. I go there every day foir years to check for new files and see what articles they have. Now I waste a lot of time trying to find both. I did figure out where the library was so now I just go there and skip trying to figure out where everything else went. Change is not always a good thing.
:ernae:

Ditto.

The first change I saw was to the downloads library, where my initial thoughts were that there was masses of wasted space and it was no longer possible to tell what sim a file was for without reading the text for each one. I didn't like it, but it looked reasonably smart.

Then they did the new front page. Good grief, it is horrible.

Masses of space for advertising, next to none for articles, which are the whole point of being there!

I'm not just grumpy because I don't like change, either. With a few simple tweaks the library could be made a lot better. The front page? To quote BBC BASIC's most famous and least helpful error message; "REDO FROM START".

I'd suggest things directly to them, but I used to work for Avsim and know the prevailing attitude of the management. They're right. Always.

Oh well. Takes one page off my daily trawl and saves some time for other things. ;)

I guess this is one of those be-careful-what-you-wish-for situations. I've wondered for years why Avsim trudged along with a dull, outdated-looking site. And now this. To be fair, I'm sure it was a lot of work to change the design so radically, but it suffers from a problem that's common among sites these days - total information overload. There are so many words crammed into such a small space that it's hard to pick out any one thing to look at. It doesn't help that there are basically two font sizes, making scanning a nightmare.

I'm not normally averse to change, but this one needed some more testing. Sigh.

To answer your question "What's wrongwith Avsim?"

The simple answer is "everything!". The more "to the point" answer is that the
web site designers have thier heads in a place where the sun doesn't shine!

The library format is ludicrous and pretty much unuseable unless you know exactly
what you want. Forget "browsing" the "new files".....it will take you 10 times longer
than the previous method where all were right there on the front page sorted
by category.

I can not comprehend the decision to go to this new design. It just doesn't work!

Paul, it took less than twenty seconds for me to go to the File Library, select "New Files," then set the option from "Normal Mode" to "Scan Mode."

Voila! A compressed, single line listing of all new files. There are also filter sort options for:

Author
Date
Downloads
Name
Relevance*
Size

Ascending
Descending

* I'm not certain just what "Relevance" means, but I'd prefer to sort on "Category" instead. I've submitted a respectful request to Brian to see about changing this.

I used to hit Avsim at least 2 or 3 times a day. Now with this new format, I'll only be going there when it's the only place I know a file to be. Ugh! Hate the new "improved" version. They just took a good thing and made it total crap....

Just an opinion so please don't anyone get thier panties in a wade, but I think for ease of use and saerch options Flightsim.com has I think the best setup. Easy to find what's new for a specific sim and never had a problem with search. I like being able to search by author or zip name if I know it, sometimes just punch in an aircraft name or manufacturer just to see what comes up. Great setup! Again just one man's opinion.

hatge it myelf as well.. I've been going there for the ;ast i dont knopw how many years and have had an account every day since i started. Then this morning they tell me i have no account and have to register through their forums?? right.. Ended up creating two new accounts. Decided to give avsim.ru a shot this morning. At least THEY usually show common ense and sanity, but their gone! Domain expired.. it's a very sad day indeed.. Jist remember folks, we're all in the same boat here so lets keep it civil ok??
Pam

Oh well; there's always "Flightsim". Maybe when Avsim gets its act together I'll go back.

I haven't been able to get there from my work computer. Malwareytes` keeps giving me the following report:

08:45:22 jdhaenen IP-BLOCK 209.8.161.216 (Type: outgoing, Port: 53005, Process: iexplore.exe)

None of the other web sites I visit trigger it.

That's the only thing that bothers me. The only thing constant is change itself.

Bill, I also "found" the "Scan Mode" but it is nothing more than a listing of the files without
regard as to their categories. I have absolutely no desire to view FS9 files. There are
distinct categories that I wish to see and used to be able to do that by just a single
click on my Firefox menu bar "Avsim" button. Now, using that "main page" entry point I have to
then select the Library, etc, etc.

As I mentioned in another post somewhere, the designers of that software obviously never
actually tried to USE it! It's bad design from the top down, IMO!

Paul

Icarus, I was able to figure out that they need to add that to the page. Until then this should work. :salute:
