Heritage flight (for Helldiver)

Time marches onwards, I suppose. That's why we have the Heritage Flight program, to attempt to acknowledge the men and machines of yesterday, upon whose shoulders today's men and machines must stand. :salute:

While the USAF has the "Heritage Flight" program, the Navy's equivalent is called the "Legacy Flight"...talk with the right people, and they will set you straight very quickly, lol. ;)

Great screenshots, Paul! Love that Tigercat!

Oops, rgr Legacy Flight. I think I knew that at some point. Don't need the navy contingent spun up, hehe. Figures each service would want thier own!

I don't think a single F-18 Hornet paired up with privately-owned vintage USN/USMC warbirds is much of a "Legacy Flight". :frown:

Exactly .... and such mixed-generation aircraft flights are not limited to the US ...

Has anyone seen the announced Orion in "Strawberry 5" PBY scheme yet?
There's some paint cans of "Navy Light Blue" waiting on my shelf to be applied to the FS KBT model... :jump:

Cheers,
Markus.

Not sure what you mean, since that's what "Legacy Flight" does... Maybe you can ask them to change the name "Legacy Flight" to "The Organization that just Does Flybys with FA-18s and vintage Navy/Marine Corps Aircraft during Air Shows"... :)
My post was a bit too negative. What I should have said is that I would prefer to see some "legacy" Navy fighters (jets) from the Navy's own inventory still flying at air shows, much like the RAF's Battle of Britain Memorial Flight or the Air Combat Command's F-4's from Tyndall. Considering the vast numbers of F-4's, F-8's, A-4's etc. in the USN/USMC inventory over the years, I don't think it would bust our defense budget to keep a few flyable... although the way things are going in DC I could be wrong.

The only Legacy Flight I have seen in person, was in 2006 at Oshkosh, which I thought was quite cool in that it teamed up an FG-1D Corsair, FJ-4 Fury, and two F-18's:

And then I have this photo of the Heritage Flight at Oshkosh 2008 (pilots were Steve Hinton, Dale Snodgrass, and Paul Moga):

There are quite a lot of logistics surrounding both programs, including pilot training and certification for the programs, both for the private civilian and military pilots, and getting the specific aircraft and pilots together at the selected events throughout the country throughout the air show season.

Delta Lima, I am huge fan of those historic/modern military pairings in the UK! I especially liked the Lancaster/Vulcan display - of which there are many videos on Youtube of that event.

That was at Oshkosh last summer, correct, likely the Friday of the event? I didn't quite make it to the show in time to see that - would have loved to!

It was OSH, but not friday. Friday is the only day I didn't go. Needed a break... 4 days straight under that sun tires you out pretty good, not to mention waving around a pretty hefty camera and lens all day.

Rgr that - it would be cool to see some of the early jets involved. There is a FJ Fury still flying somewhere too... In 2006, when I worked at NAS Lemoore, in CA, the navy held "training day" for the war bird pilots so they could get certified to participate in these legacy flights. So they all showed up in their favorite mounts. No more work got done that day! These pics were taken in August in the Central Valley of California, when it's about 200 degrees outside, which is why you see some guys hangin out under the wings looking for shade!

hehe, nice shots!
I always have to grin when I see the "petroleum burners" struggle to fly slow and match the speed of the prop driven oldies. Look at those nose high positions and the Phantom with the leading edge slats hanging all the way out :)

Cheers,
Mark

LOL yeah maybe thats why you will never see a PBY in a heritage flight :icon_lol: Though if its primary mission was search & rescue/ASW it would fly well in formation with a Seahawk or Seaking and would be fitting. :jump:

ya know,, i'm kinda thinking Kiwicat had a great idea.. why not make a heritage flight of our own on multiplayer say for the fourth of July??

It was nice to see my Uncle Major Sam Folsom, the commander of the first Marine Squardron of F7-Fs, flying along with one of these oil burners. He was a nice guy in spite of being a Marine, in a all Navy family.
I guess that the Marines are part of the Navy. - Sort of...

I have been wondering about the Phantom's slats myself. I was at Tyndall two weeks ago and saw that the slats were out no matter what the bird was doing. Slow or fast. I don't know the proper operation of them, but I wonder if they are locked out. I know the Collins Foundation bird is "handicapped" by locking the intake somehow, maybe they do the same to the QF-4 slats? I have a couple hundred shots, I will go through some and see what I can see. Maybe I was imagining things.

I have seen many of these flights at Oshkosh. The pilots are exceptionally good flying these aircraft low and slow in formation. My hat is off to them. Great pics everyone.
