Just wondering out loud!

Whoever posted the Virtavia F-100 pics with the Thunderbird paint job, please feel free to do it again.

The "magic genie" is called "GMax, Notepad2, GIMP and Google". ;P

It made my favourite planes come true...

The other ingredient for the "magic genie" is plenty of enthusiasm; without that the others are worthless. I have lost mine lately; so 3ds Max, Photoshop and the other tools lie unused on my hard drive.

As in real life, I only fly the aircraft... I don't build them or maintenance them. I leave that to the professionals. People who can model aircraft, create textures, build FDEs, write gauges, and sounds have my full respect... but I am not one of them.

I would also like to see more screen shots of the Virtavia F-100. Anything without tanks and a fixed fuel probe would make me so happy. Someday, I'm sure we will have one... FSX may be with us for a long time to come.

Well, the "modeling mojo" requires recharge times once in a while.
Unless developing for FSX is your bread and butter, that's totally okay. No one's rushing you.

If you're not willing to contribute, then don't request unless asked to.

No offense, but that's just my personal take on things.

That model looks super nice and smooth Michael. I have this book with a million side views of huns showing 1-4 aircraft form every unit in the world ! This one is a painters nightmare/dream depending on how you want to put it. Oh and I talked to Ron today...

Ok Bjoern, enough is enough. You seem to take great joy in trashing this airplane every time there's a thread about it. Your comments in this thread have had absolutely nothing to do with the original subject and unless you have pertinent information about the current WIP of the Super Saber, please keep your comments to yourself. I don't care what you think about the F-100 and neither does anyone else who is a fan of the airplane. I personally don't care for the Tornado, but I don't go looking for every opportunity to show my ignorance by jumping into another thread and bashing it.

Furthermore, who do you think you are telling a contributing member of this thread (skyblazer) that unless he's willing to contribute that he shouldn't request anything? Bring yourself down off the pedestal Bjoern and find your rightful place with the others in this forum and show some respect and decorum, otherwise stay out of the conversation.

. . .and that sir, is my take on things!

Dag,

Actually, hand on heart, the model so far is awfully good, even after its two year break, it has stood the test of time exceptionally well, the poly count makes it uber smooth in sim and even adding all the extras it'd still be hard pressed to drag down the lowest of systems.

I too have that book and many others, probably far too many to be of any use LOL. You are right, what the prototype lacks in diversity it certainly makes up for in paint schemes, and I talked to Ron too, no commitments, but we might be able to sort something that hopefully pleases everybody, the guys here for asking, Razbam as a commercial concern and myself under my current personal conditions. I do have to confess, Ron knows how to push the right buttons LOL and the fact that these were based at RAF Woodbridge and Bentwaters, my two local fields (one closed the other handed back the RAF, dang I miss the USAF presence in Suffolk LOL) makes it very hard to discard. Anything that flew from those two or Lakenheath and Mildenhall automatically goes into the high personal interest catagory and the 81st TFW has quite a colorfull history too.

Kindest

Michael

Michael,

It is nice to hear of your interest in the US Air Forces in Europe. Having a passion for aircraft is a beautiful thing, and appreciating the history and the lives of all the people the aircraft affected is even more beautiful. I'm sure that it goes a long way towards making development possible, and making an enduring aircraft in FSX.

I'm sure all developers feel strongly about the aircraft they develop -- but having a historical and emotional connection is very nice.

We are lucky to have this simulator that allows us to connect to machines and experiences that have passed on.

I want to thank all of the developers who even consider working on such an aircraft.... it really makes me feel good to know other people care about this machine and its storied past.

Cheers,

Chris

P.S. I received an E-mail today from Virtavia. They think they may have an F-100D model by early 2012... but it could always get pushed back or pushed up. They still need to do the VC. I hope they don't mind me sharing that information, I just sent them an e-mail through their web site, and they got back to me in a few hours.... pretty good customer support it would seem.

Chris, your right, an interest in a project is paramount, above some one mentioned enthusiasm, thats bucket that takes a long time to fill but exponentially faster to empty :). I've done an awful lot of models over the years, into three figures if you count the 3rd party meshes I had to bend a little to get in sim and make FS ready, I'd be dishonest if I said everyone was a project that I had interest in, thats one of the biggest down sides to commercial work, you often have to work with subjects that vary from mild interest to complete in difference, but, the end result must look like you really enjoyed it.

The other two over riding issues are dead lines and yield, quite often modelers have to opt for second best to maximize yield, thats why you do not see many if any of the fringe interest aircraft that the likes of Alphasim were so famous for, its a tight business and it has no room for those aircraft, the likes of C-97, C-133, F-84, F-89, B-50, B-47, B-45, B-36 etc etc are relics of the past in real life and in commercial FS development I'm afraid.

Regarding this area, the East of England is a major historical area, not only in WWII but the following years of the cold war and even now with the thawed East/West relationship, just about every USAF aircraft has been stationed in either Suffolk, Essex, Norfolk or Cambridgshire, even those not stationed have rotated through or exercised, the B-36 being a prime example at RAF Lakenheath and one notable exception being the F-106.

I only found out recently that we had land based nuclear missiles in the UK, the Thor missile was based at several locations in the East of England, some old converted air bases, one being RAF Tuddenham near Lakenheath and Mildenhall. Thor missiles arrived in a C-97 and then transported by road to the disused and converted RAF bomber command airfield. I've been there, driven down the roads the transporters used, drunk in the local pub that base staff would have used, whats left, nothing, absolutely nothing, just vast open agricultural fields. a huge slice of Britain's early defense system wiped clean off the face of the earth LOL.

I too think FSx will be around for some time, I heard rumors and have read posts that speculate there is a new platform coming along, frankly I think FSx is about the best it can get, what ever comes along now will require much more depth and systems integration and I think that will result in limitations elsewhere, FSx is the pinnacle of mod-able flight sim IMHO. Still we shall see :).

Best

Michael

Funnily enough I know exactly where you're coming from Michael!

I've not opened up the Hustler since last August - and to be fair I don't miss the modelling side much, but I do feel an element of guilt in that I have a good exterior Hustler model in need of a new VC, that needs to see the light of day in FSX.

Perhaps after Summer.....who knows.

I think a well deserved break can't do any harm.

My ex-father in law was on Thor missiles back in the early 60's. Although he remained a non-com throughout his 38 year career his logbook makes for fascinating reading, and he actually got some very interesting posting as a result of his specialities; he actually was posted to Vandenberg as part of the early UK involvement in Thor. He often claims that he fired one of the rockets in the piece of stock footage used in many films, showing a twin launch from Vandenberg - I was never sure how true the claim was, but he certainly has one of the launch keys from that day as a souvenir!

So that's where the B-58 has been hiding all this time! Whilst I can fully understand your position I do sincerely hope that one day it will get finished. I'm too young to have ever seen one flying but I love the designs of the 50's and 60's, they just seemed to get things done back in those days. Your (I believe it's yours anyway) SR-71 is one of my favorites in FSX. :salute:

But back to the F-100, hopefully it too makes an appearance in FSX one of these days.

"Joy"?
Yeah, right...I get up in the morning thinking "Well, how can I best trash the F-100 today?" and rub my hands in the most evil fashion...

I'd continue on to ramble about the connection between desire and willingness to learn the associated tools to get this plane into FSX, but as usual, it's just a waste of time, server space and bandwidth.

Hint: If one wants to fly a F-100, invest $20 or whatever a Strike Fighters title costs nowadays and get the plane, suitable loadout plus the ability to blow stuff up on the ground and in the air.

So, as you see it, unless an individual takes the effort to learn the necessary tools to basically "Do it themselves", then they aren't worthy? lol, Please.

lol, why would we want to do that. . .you've already said it was a crap airplane and I certainly have other things I could spend $20 on, lol.

Here is where I posted the images of some of the textures I had painted for the Virtavia version a couple of years ago. It's still a WIP in progress (hopefully) as is everything else over there until the C-17 is finished and shipped.

I think this is the thread falcon was referring to from last year asking the same questions about F-100's in development.

Thanks for the links to the pics. I got alot of deja' vu when I looked at the threads. Same people and stuff as in this thread, lol.
