Best Freeware Panes and Demos

Hi, all!

I've been trying to expand my FSX hangar, and I'm not having a lot of luck. I was wondering if you people would be so kind as to help me (and those who have the same quest for great freeware planes) to find those hidden jems. :mixedsmi:

Thank you,

Walter

I have often thought that a stickie list of FSX and serviceable FS9 freeware planes (and other products) should be maintained here...but

search for anything by Tim Conrad (Piglet)

Ants (Anthony Lynch) airplanes and scenery

that's a start ...and a darn good one

oh, if you like carrier ops...traps and cats - get Dino Cattaneo's T-45 GoshHawk and F-14
then get Javier's Nimitz carrier pack and the AIcarriers program - just search those terms

Thank you so much for the great start! I do have almost all of Tim Piglet Conrad's aircraft. Now I have just gotten some of Ant's aircraft, all thanks to your post. The carrier stuff is great, too!

Thank you for the start! :salute:

  • Manfred Jahn's C47
  • Dave Garwood's Hawker Hunters, Auster Autocrat and Bristol Beaufighter
  • The Royale French Navy Dassault Étendard
  • Tim Conrad has been mentioned, all of his stuff is great, but you absolutely need the Skyraider, the A-29B Super Tucano (turboprop advanced trainer) and the Mitsubishi J2M3.
  • Rollus Mirage 2000 is not available anymore, but if you can find it on a torrent tracker, as far as his legal disclaimer goes, it wouldn't be illegal.
  • The Simshed BAE Nimrod
  • The Sludge Hornet 1.2
  • Section F8 F-86 Sabre, if you are using DX9, the portover works fine. (remove effects for better fps)
  • Iris F-15, now freeware, again, if you're using dx9
  • Thomas Ruth A330-200 MRTT Tanker
  • Alejandro Rojas MD-83 for the tubes.
Can't think of anything else right now, but with the above you should have fun.

Rob Richardson's wonderful FSX planes, available at Britsim.com - these actually made me dustoff my copy of FSX and reinstall it, as my new rig can finally run it at a reasonable level. So far we have had the De Havilland Hornet (in a variety of versions), DH Vampire and Gloster Meteor Mks 8 and 14.

Staying on the Brit theme, and also at Britsim.com, you can find a rather nice Fairey Gannet; and at Flyingstations.com there is a Westland Wyvern, a very nice Fairey Swordfish (and HMS Victorious to fly her from), HMS Ark Royal (the last one, not the recently retired one) and the promise of a Buccaneer S1 to fly from her decks!!

Also worth checking out the FS-KBT P-3 Orion and F-18 Superhornet/Growler at Flightsim and Avsim; both originally for FS9 they work equally well in FSX.

EDIT - I'm embarrassed!! Also worth looking at Premier Aircraft Design, all of their recent releases have been separate versions for FSX and FS9. I've certainly been enjoying flying the Trislander and Jetstream in FS9, I'm sure they are equally good in FSX.

The FPS issues with IRIS planes always come from the HUD they use. Just replace that HUD by the one from the default Hornet, that should solve the problem.

A few more that you may want to consider:

Rick Piper - an awesome HS748 for short-haul turboprop work, and for ab initio training, his Chipmunk is just delightful.

The Wozza Harvard trainer is also fantastic. Simshed has just released a Grob Tutor ...

Restauravia Zephyr - no better way to learn how to trap aboard a French carrier! :) Also from this fine crew is a great Mystere IVA fighter bomber, and an awesome Vautour bomber.

If you're into tubeliners, then the recently released Tom Ruth B727s are good. Also - the Opensky/FS Freesky has done a series of Airbus, Boeings, and Bombardier jet airliners. While on the topic of tubliners, the FS9 Sud Aviation Caravelle works nicely in FSX, as does the fantastic Yannick/Lavinge FS2000 Falcon 50, recently revamped for FSX. No, I didn't mistype that - a fantastic model first modelled in Sep 2001, still rocks today, with the great work of our own SOH painters and gauge experts that still takes your breath away.

There's a recently released Grumman Duck, if you're undecided between water and land ...

I'm not into aircraft prior to the thirties - but I seem to recall a German DR1 floating about somewhere.

that should keep you busy for a couple of hours .... :icon_lol:

Wow! That's a lot of planes! Thanks for the list! I have realized that I am interested in vintage, stunt, and flying boats primarily. Those airliners may change my mind a bit… :icon_lol:

I also found the Dr. 1 that was mentioned.

If you are interested in getting it, go to the link at the bottom of the page. The top link does not work.

For flying boats, you should go to Britsim and search for Jens B. Kristensen. His flying boats have been around for several years and are occasionally updated. His work is among the best.

Thank you for the suggestions!

The Fire Boss is very cool!!! I love the detail! :mixedsmi:

I love all of the great planes that are showing up! Thank you all soo much.
