Heinkel 177 Question

Hello all,

Just asking, in which theatre and which specific role would this bomber be best suited when it comes out for CFS3? The ETO or MTO, or is it specifically designed for use in the Atlantic War?

I found some info on it being used in the Russian front, I was wondering if it was used elsewhere during the war.

Operational history is also here..

and here:

I'd say go with ETO, and MAW Both.
I can build missions for the eastern front in MAW and for the Atlantic in ETO..
Since it was used in both areas of operation..

Thanks for the additional information househobbit!

BTW how was it used as a transport on the Eastern front? I thought the bomb bays would not allow for troop use.

I couldn't find any where it was used to carry troops, but as Led Zeppelin said it was used to carry cargo a few times..

Just for fun

Theoretically if this particular bomber could reach the Urals or the Scottish coastlines, what type of fighter escort would it have had? If any?

109's with drop tanks possibly?

Hmmm.. I thought there would be a hint of when this bomber would be coming out by now.

I guess what the wermact boys on the ground are saying is true:

If its a silver plane above its American,

If its a Dark colored plane its British,

If theres no plane at all, its the Luftwaffe!

For Operation Steinbock (a bombing raid on London in February 1944) they didn't use a fighter escort; they used an interesting tactic, climbing to altitude and then entered a gentle dive meant that they maintained a speed of about 400 mph approaching, over and leaving the target - one was lost to night fighters, but this tactic certainly made intereception more difficult.

Interesting. Im in expectation waiting on this model for the sim! I wonder if it'l have flaming engines like the real thing?

In reference to this operation, how many made it back exactly?

Well, for various technical reasons most did not make it as far as London; but only the one aircraft was lost, which meant the loss rate was 10% - compare that with the overall Luftwaffe losses for Steinbock of about 60%!

I've always had a soft spot for the Greif, it is one of those aircraft that just looks right. Heinkel took one aircraft from the production line and identified and fixed over 100 problems which eliminated all of the issues causing engine fires and technical problems - but it was deemed to be too disruptive to production to incorporate those mods, so the problems persisted until the end of the war. Realistically if they could have sorted the issues they would have had one of the best 4 engined bombers in the ETO - I remember back in my plastic modelling days seeing a conversion kit which turned the Airfix Greif into the He 274, a proper 4 engined bomber with twin fins; if you applied the a late war scheme of RLM 75/81/76 you had something that looked very much like a Lancaster!!

Please! Please! Do you have any pictures?
Please post some of your model if you can!

The model was not mine, it was made by the inimitable Mike McEvoy back in the good ol' days of Scale Aircraft Modelling; sadly my copies of SAM were abandoned 2 house moves ago, my plastic modelling days being far behind me.

But if anybody wants to make a He 274, as well as a standard Greif, I'll be more than happy to replicate the scheme for you!! :icon_lol:

..been thinkin' about re-delving into plastic modeling... (if I can afford a kit) ^^^^:kilroy:^^^^
