Deb and I may (most likely) be moving in the coming months. Not far...just a few miles from where we live now. If this move were not such an advantageous move for Deb, I wouldn't go for it. But since this move will make things easier for her and allow her to regain some independence and a sense of control, I will suffer through it.
We will be going from a 900 square foot, 2 bedroom apartment (half a duplex actually) with a one car garage (our apartment is over the garages..ours and the neighbor's) with a laundry room on the end of the garage....to a 1120 square foot, 2 story duplex half with a 1.5 car garage, a first floor laundry room, 2 bedroom, 1 full bath, 1 half bath (on first floor). We will be gaining 220 square feet of living space, gaining a half bath, and with the laundry room on the first floor instead of down in the garage, Deb will be able to do laundry again. The yard at the new place is nice and level and can be easily accessed from the ground floor living areas....which will make it much easier for Deb to get outside on her own, allow her to check the mail, potty the dogs, walk around the yard. And it is across the street from her mom's place...and her sister is moving into the other side tomorrow...so Deb will be right next door to her little sister/best friend.
Monthly costs are basically the same.
I will be leaving my much loved 3.5 acre Bass and Blue Gill pond, the wonderful view of 20 acres of country land, covered bridge, 4 acre wet land marsh full of Red Wing Black Birds and frogs.
But...as Deb keeps pointing out to me....I will finally have a MAN CAVE! The entire basement will be MINE! 560 square feet of floor space with 10 foot ceilings! That is one heck of a man cave! And I get to decorate it any way I want...and Deb has promised me my very own HD TV to go into my man cave!!!!!! 560 square feet...that is more than 1/2 of our current apartment...as a MAN CAVE!
The down sides to this move...other than losing easy access to the pond and the wonderful fishing, other than moving away from what amounts to a wildlife sanctuary to the edge of suburbia (the very outer edge of suburbia...1/4 mile away from country.....still very quite and peaceful and it's on a short dead end street with maybe 10 other houses)...is that the new place is all electric...electric heat, electric water heater and NO central air. I fear that the cost of electric may go up in the coming years....and I don't look forward to trying to pay 2 and 3 hundred dollar electric bills each month.
But, I will do this move gladly as it will give Deb a better mobility and independence and reduce her reliance on me for transportation to visit her sis and her mom.
We just have to wait for the lady who lives there now to either move or get evicted....she hasn't paid rent going on 4 months....the landlord is a really nice guy who understands that this lady lost her job due to the crappy economy....but even the nicest landlord in the world won't go without rent payments for ever.
I will hate leaving the folks we rent off now.....wonderful people!...but I'll still see them as they are more than just our landlords, they are friends who I spend several hours a week sitting around and talking with.
