Cool pics!

I might wander over tomorrow and check it out. The tickets are kind of pricy for me right now. On the plus side I get the B-25 and B-17 flying over the house pretty low for free! :wiggle:

Excellent photos, of what looks like a superb event! I love that Black/Gold Waco especially!

What's the story on the Corsair restoration?

What's the story on the Corsair restoration?

It is being restored by the SD Aerospace Museum - I was there yesterday at their annex which is located at Gillespie Field. Anyone can volunteer there and help out.

They have the wings off, obviously at the fold, and are refurbishing them - they had the flap sections pulled off along with all access panels etc...

The cowling was finished but they left it off for the static display to show off the engine, blower, and cooling ducting - which is pretty cool - I had never seen a Corsair with her skirts up before.

I like the older GA. Especially the polished aluminum and green Cessna, and the Swift :ernae:

those were among my favorites too..along with the Grumman F3F-2, the Cessna 190 radial

and the fancy Stearman in Red/Maroon and Gold and the Black Waco Taperwing

couple more of those...

Thank you for the additional photos and information on the Corsair project! I had forgotten about that one. It is a very late model Corsair, an F4U-7, that served with the French Aeronaval. Many years later it ended up on display at Battleship Park, in Mobile, Alabama, painted as an AU-1 Corsair. After Hurricane Katrina hit the area in 2005, there was not enough money to fix the damage that was done to it, so it was sent to the San Diego museum.

Here's a photo of what it looked like in 1989:

oh you meant THAT story...lol

I hadn't gotten that far with the questions when I was there yesterday...

I did meet a fellow who flew them - in 1950 before being transitioned to the Banshee...and then on to two tours in Vietnam in the F-4 Phantom. So many stories to tell, and me the avid listener.

I lobbied my dad to display the Thorp, but to no avail. Our hangar is on the west side of the field. You probably saw it today without knowing it!

you know I looked for it...there are a lot of hangars and aprons and whatnot at Gillespie - its pretty spread out too. Much bigger than it seems to be. I sure would have taken a picture of the Thorp and posted it here had I found it.

Some very interesting aircraft there; the older GA particularly. Nice Firefly too.

Great photos Heywoood, well worth the posting.

That's this weekend, huh? Bummer. I was down in Balboa Park all yesterday. I could have driven over. And today I've got awesome seats for the Padres game. So much for my promise to myself to go to some local airshows this season.

Nice photos in any case. Thanks for sharing.

with with all the smoke, flame and thunder its no wonder...still - I kept wondering where the fireman with the extinguisher was...isn't it required to have a man standing by with one whenever these bad boys are 'fired up' ??
