I'm working on the freeware FS9 Alphasim F-105 D and F models. Been flying these birds a good bit lately and felt they needed some TLC to make them look better. While looking for new schemes to lay onto the planes, I came across a site with two pics of a F-105 and the two crew members who flew 100 combat missions in the bird in Vietnam. One pic was of the guys with their Thud in Vietnam, dedicating their new nose art. The second pic shows the guys many years later with their Thud, after it had been restored and the nose art was being rededicated.

I have never seen a Thud in person, so I had no real perspective to give me a sense of how large the plane really is. Seeing how the Thud towers over these two men about knocked my socks off.

It was a big airplane. The D model was longer than a b-25, was taller, and it had half the wingspan. The F/G model was even longer
 
I was on the taxiway at KSEA the other night and pulled up beside a Boeing 737 and the 105 was like 1/2 the size of the 737. I asked myself, "Is the 105 really that big or did Microsoft mess up the scale on the 737". After seeing the pic of the two guys being dwarfed by the 105, and seeing a pic of a full size Ford pickup parked under the wing of an 105...I know that the 105 really is that big.

If you have never seen one in person, have you thought about making a trip down to the Air Force Museum? They have at least one there, I think two diff. models if memory serves me correct....

I never had any idea it was THAT big. That photo completely changes my view of the airplane. The Alphasim model didn't seem/feel anywhere near that size.

If you want to take a little trip out West to Roy, Utah just North of Salt Lake City there is the Hill AFB Museum. There are 2 examples of the Republic F-105 Thunderchief. There is a 2 seat F-105G and a F-105D single seat on display in the Linquist Stewart Gallery. This is a great aerospace museum well worth the trip and all they want for admission is a donation.

I have been to the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB twice...but sadly, both times were only for an hour and a half or so. First time I was with Dad, back in 1986 or so, and we stopped in to kill a bit of time before he had to go to the VA hospital for an appointment with his physical therapist following a knuckle replacement in his right middle finger...I barely got to the WW2 section and it was time to go. Second time I was there, in September 2007, I was meeting an SOH member traveling through...he was giving me a computer system that he no longer needed (the one I had at the time was cooking down and dying).....he was behind schedule and his wife had a killer migraine headache, so I left the museum to meet them in a neighboring town that was closer to the highway they were traveling on....that time I made it about 1/2 way through the WW2 section.....to the corner where the P-47 and B-26 are displayed.

One of these days, I will make it to the museum and have it set up so I can visit all day, spend the night in a local hotel, then visit the entire day the next day. I actually have a standing offer from an SOH member who lives in Dayton to crash at his place for the night. I was hoping to make the trip this spring...but things just didn't pan out that way.

It takes a full day Plus to stop and see it all..Well worth the trip to Dayton town..

The real F-105 was about half the length of a 737 and had a bit over 1/3 the wingspan of the 737. The 105 was big... really big. I well remember seeing them fly over my head on many days and I have had the opportunity to stand underneath them.

As for MS getting the size of the 737 right, they can't make trees of the correct height, why would aircraft be any different? LOL
 
That is one of the things I enjoy about FS; and one of the reasons my hangers stay so full. It brings to life planes that may no longer even exists; and allows you to compare planes from two different periods side-by-side.

Yep....got a good bit done, got a good bit to go. Working on skins for the F model first. Then will do skins for the D models. I have two camo patterns for the D and two for the F, as well as a bare metal kit for both. All MDL files are now reflective able...originally only the D Bare and Drop Tanks models had reflective....now the D Loaded and F models have joined the bare metal club. A totally kick butt effects package has been added to the planes, I will be working up a sound package for the Thud....one that is WAY louder than is environmentally safe!

I can attest to the obscene noise levels of the real Thud. I remember when the VA-ANG transitioned from F-84F's to F-105D's. Lots of noise, kicking in the the afterburner was close to sonic boom in intensity. If I recall correctly, VA-ANG got into trouble with the locals over the noise issue.
