O/T Strike Fighters ww2?

Pat Pattle

SOH-CM-2025
Hi all,

I know I should ask this over on the CombatAce SF forums but in the past I've not found the natives to be too friendly to be honest....

Does anyone know what's available in the way of WW2 stuff please?. Am thinking specifically of the BoB era and not just aircraft but scenery & airfields etc.

Thanks,

Pat :wavey:

No pics but historical stuff.

Here, you will find where Luftwaffe units were based as long as other usefull informations:

Informations regarding RAF squadrons:

Informations regarding recco units, you will find description of early Spitfire PR that were in use during the summer of 1940 for exemple.

There's a fair bit, but it isn't all very good, and the community is so fragmented by squabbling that it is very hard to get much done. I think that's something that got to gregoryp and Bear, too. AvHistory gave up on SF2 fairly fast, I'm sorry to say.

For BoB, you can find:

Bf109e-3/4 - one of the better models, but without LODs and as is often the case in SF, the cockpit is hardly up to the MAW 109e.

Hurricane - the old PD Hurri, pre-MAW updates. No LODs, pretty basic, average cockpit.

Spitfire MkI - again PD, as above.

Spitfire MkI substitute. The stock SF2I MkIX modified to look more like and fly more like a MkI. Did all but the FM myself.

He111 - Mathias's GC model ported over. One of the better efforts, and skins from CFS2/3 can be used.

Ju88a-4 - has holes in the wings. I mean, bits that disappear. It may have been fixed, but...

And, er... That's probably about it really. The terrains are optimistic at best, airfields nowhere near what we've come to find in CFS3, and overall, the single good thing about WW2 SF2 that I can think of is that the enemy AI really do try to kill you. But flak is less well modelled, as only a direct hit will damage you, and damage is evaluated in a way which is more apt for 1960s and 1970s AIM fighting than guns. In fact, as SF2 models the bullets, all you need is a flight of enemy bombers to open fire on you for your computer to slow to slideshow mode. Add that to the general lack of good LODs...

Although I do do a fair amount of work for SFG2 - helping a bit with a beta Bf109d-1 right now, and have done a series of Spits and late 109s, among other things - I have to say that CFS3 is better for WW2 except as far as the AI are concerned. SF2 does not support prop pitch or fuel-air mixture, for example. The default aircraft is the F-4E Phantom, not the P-47d...

Finally, I see your point about the community - it is a lot less friendly and informal than we are here. I spend my time tip-toeing round problems rather than bringing them up, because it's not always well looked upon to criticise. The result is that things are not always addressed. Having said that, there are some good people who are easy to work with - Monty_CZ and RussoUK are two of the leading modellers with whom I've done the odd bit of work, Kevin "The Wrench" is a decent type and one of the leading figures, and so on and so forth. You just need to get to know who is who!

But anybody who uses CFS3 for post-Korean War conflicts is making a mistake - that is precisely where SF2 really does shine. And I mean that quite honestly!

Thanks for the links gents, a couple of those I'd forgotten about. :)

Only Nigel actually read my post though, or else I didn't word it correctly :blind:. I'm asking about 'Strike Fighters' the 3rd Wire flight sim. I've seen the odd screenie of RAF airfields, and mention of BoB mods but trying to wade through the muddle of threads, impolite and downright rude posts on the forums is rather tedious and not unlike the IL2 generation.

Anyhow, it seems that it's probably not worth pursuing then.

Btw whats the difference between series 1 and 2 ??

Andre - thanks for the info on Saint-Valery-en-Caux, I'll look into that one further. :)

Hi, you forgot about the A-team stuff. They jusy released a martin maryland for sf2 and martin 167, plus some corsairs and a few others. see here:

http://www.cplengineeringllc.com/SFP1/

Actually, I didn't. I think you'll find the conversions of the PD Spitfire MkI and Hurricane , the GC He111, and the Ju88 series are A-Team aircraft. But the FMs are (were?) for pre-2008 patch SF1, and they don't fly quite right in SF2.

The main difference between post-2008 patch SF1 and SF2 is technical - DX10, Vista and 7 compatible, etc, etc. They are globally easier to use (as a modder) than the earlier series because they use an improved system for adding weapons, guns, etc.

As I said, despite some caricatural elements, SF2 is great for post-Korean War simming. For WW2, it's good for dogfighting, but that's really about it. It would be better if many modellers took a bit more care about finishing their models to the highest standards with multiple LODs and decent cockpits...

Anyhow, it seems that it's probably not worth pursuing then.

On the whole, I'd agree. But given the ridiculously low cost, I'd advise you to nip along and get the base SF2 game at the very least. You'll certainly find it's well worth the price, and I'm sure you'll find yourself getting a lot of amusement from it. It's CFS3-friendly, unlike IL-2 - in other words, the controls and so on are not so dissimilar that you need to spend days getting used to how it works. You can set it up to imitate CFS3 on-screen quite easily.

And if you ask nicely, I can point you towards some of the more interesting add-ons! :icon_lol: The best are late-WW2: the Israel Expansion (TW payware) Spitfire (AI but easily fixed) and Mustang are very nice indeed, and Monty_CZ's S-99 has been returned to its original state as a late Bf109g/k. That already gives you three high-quality aircraft to mess around with!

That's the one. The price seems to have gone up since I bought it... But that's the one, anyway.

Yes Clive, looks like the one I have anyway! : )

I'll go along with Nigel, especially regards WWII for it, but it is a good sim overall, I think you will enjoy it, once you get use to it, especially the early jets, including the beautifull Hawker Hunter, and awsome EE Lightning!

Great sim for the money!
