PNG Landclass

Well, after running into dead ends on landclass for The Papau New Guinea area I decided to look into how to do landclass. FSDevelopers website is the place to look first of course and I found information there on using a kml for among other things, landclass.

I kept that page open and set to work getting the programs I needed to get started. Got them installed and opened Google Earth. I figured I'd start small so I looked at the area where I live and decided on the city of Denison to the north. Followed the directions and produced a kml file. Ran the FSXkml program which turned the information into a bgl and 'voila' new landclass for Denison.

However, it looks nothing like Dension, lol. One of the necessary requirements I think, would be to have a working knowledge of what each type of landclass looks like and how that fits your needs. I chose a city_crops_dry (that's not the exact tag, but close) which is pretty much what we have here, but when loaded in the sim, it's a lot more city than it is crops and the city sprawl was way overdone. So it'll take some practice to get better.

Anyway, my target is PNG now and I'll have to do some research to be as close as possible to the actual landclass layout, but it should prove interesting and at least I can get rid of the desert, which right now inhabits more than half the Island.

Hi there,

maybe you've seen it already but I've made a visual catalog of all FSX land class types a while back: http://forum.simflight.com/topic/44307-fsx-landclass-table-and-visual-catalog/

In the "Region B" tab of the spreadsheet you can click on the class numbers in column A to look at a screenshot of the respective class.

Be aware though that PNG is in region H "Tropics Pacific" meaning several of the classes have local variants that will look different from the Region B screenshots. There's a list of the six unique Region H variants in the "All Regions" tab of the spreadsheet.

Have fun with the landclass work - it's addictive !

Cheers, Holger

Hey Falcon409

Did you pick up the PNG Mesh from Ozx yet?

http://aussiex.org/forum/index.php?/files/file/517-papua-new-guinea-replacement-mesh/

way better than the default mesh

I've found a few airports listed for PNG over at freewarescenery not sure if you have them but i thought id share the link all the same

& good luck with your landclassing

Thanks Steve,

Yea, I tried the Mesh and unfortunately it left all the streams, lakes and rivers about 200ft in the air. I also tried the Andy Weirs mesh and FSX World Mesh from FSGenesis with the same results. I did pick up the freeware airports, done by Graham Michael of Pacific Island Simulations. . .nice work.:salute:

Great info Holger, thanks for the link and all the assistance you give budding scenery artists. Very much appreciated.:salute:

Falcon, since I'm new to FSX and I just bought the payware PNG package, do you think that the FS9 landclass that is at AVSIM would work? Like I said I'm new to FSX as I just made the switch a couple of months ago so if this is a bad idea let me know. I hope you get something good out of your efforts, I would like to do hop or two with you when you get everything situated.

Best way to find out is to load the Landclass files into a separate folder in the addon scenery folder and activate it in the scenery library. That way, if it doesn't work, you know right where the files are and can delete it easily. I would say give it a try, I looked for it and never found it, otherwise I might have beat you to it, lol.
