There I was minding my onw business when I heard what sounded like radials. Loud ones. Ran outside. B-25 flying over the house. How cool is that? Hope it comes back.
 
very cool....we had a flight of 4 AT 6 flying over and over,,they were doing a "race track pattern" over me while waiting for the parade to start downtown on friday.....i love living here,,got reno race planes...several warbirds,,,the seafuries down the hill a bit in Ione,they come up the canyon and fly in the airspace over the bridge here

I know that feeling all too well Guys, awesome aint it?

How many split seconds and pushed aside furniture did the dash for outside take you PRB? Lol! :icon_lol:
 
Will never forget the sight of stepping out the front door of my home in Mililani, HI one morning heading for the office at Pearl Harbor, and glancing toward the west, toward Wheeler Field and Schofield Barracks. Three B-25s were flying due south, very low in a "V" formation, following the Kamehameha Highway probably toward Hickam AFB. There wasn't much engine sound, but there was enough! They were there for the 50th anniversary of the end of WWII in the Pacific.
 
Mine aren't exactly warbirds; I live next to a regular Canadair Cl-215 training area.

But the sound of 2-3 pairs of PW R-2800's winging in at barely 100ft on finals over my place never fails to get the adrenalin kicking in overtime!

Yep! :icon_lol: There's a second between hearing the sound and realizing they belong to "big radials", which can mean only one thing... Then you run like a lunatic to get outside fast enough. B-25s have such a unique sound too. Love hearing the heavy base component bounce around and reflect off things. No FS plane sounds like that, no matter how many sub-woofers you have! This one must have been from the Missouri Wing of the CAF, there's a B-25 there, which was gone the last time I visited. This one was headed north, towards the CAF airport. Good stuff.

I see your B-25 and raise you 6 Apaches and a Blackhawk. Was out outside when first a flight of 5 Apaches flew over my house later followed up by a sixth and a Blackhawk. Military aircraft aren't unusual in OKC but Army aviation is rare.
 
I agree 100% about those Radial Engines !

Here in Kansas City we have a Airline History Museum and they have a Flying "Constelation" nick named "Connie"......they dont take it up as often as they used too because the fuel is so high.....but when they do i am always outside waiting for it to fly over.......them 4 engines have a wonderful sound like No Other.......i have attached a few over the fence shots.....Enjoy !

I saw that one a couple years ago when I went to the KC Aviation Expo at Wheeler Downtown
 
Crash, I went on that one about 10 years ago and looked around at an airshow in Texarkana Arkansas. Last I heard it was grounded with engine problems. Did they get it squared away?

Exactly. :applause:

You go through a mental flash phase, deducting other sounds from the list of possibilities, then click! You're dashing.

And its before the sounds really even become sounds...more of a deep hum.

I've tried and tried as you say to reproduce it, but as you say; it can't be totally acheived. You've probably noticed that especially on the big radial jobs; its not volume (there's nothing harsh)... you can 'feel' the air absorbing the power from the props.

AWESOME!
 
About three weeks ago a B-24J flew over my house. The Collings Foundation was visiting my local airport and brought their B-17G, B-24J, and TP-51C. The B-24 was the only one I saw in the air.

A few years ago......you know how they stand by with a fire extinguisher during the starting procedure RIGHT?

Well all went well with a few engines.......But as one was beginning to START........it caught fire and nearly burnt in to the wing !

Since that time......it all back together and flyable again.



A rebuilt Radial for a Connie......or any thing else that also used that Engine........is close to $150,000 !
