Black Friday. Anyone going out shopping? Waiting in long lines overnite. In the cold, wee hours of the morning. I read a couple of stores are starting Thursday evening. Not me.
 
waching the local evening news from sacramento...news crew went to a Best BUY store in the Natomas area ( out near sac international)there were cars in the lot with people in them,,,as the crew sat watching..the people slowly dismounted,began setting up lawn chairs and tents,the line began forming,,,BB store manager came out..made a short spech about being polite and curtious,be clean..ect...and went back in...as the news crew was about to leave a man walked up and began pacing....he then began to yell....news crew in ACTIONNNNNNN......he turned out to be the property ower/land managment guy,he said...you have 15 minutes to remove your chairs,tent,ice chests,poop buckets and everything else,and leave his lot,,,,,,in 15 minutes he would call the police and have them removed...someone yelled were waiting for black friday..wheres your christmas spirt...the man said...this is private property,you are 3-4 days early,,,,you are liotering,i have the sings ( and he pointed to the city/count code signs),,,,he then added if you chooce to protest...do it on the sidewak at the street,or you will be arrested for tresspasing for the intent to disrutp free comerse( dont know about that one)........he then said....just stay off this land unless your intention is to go IN and shop,,otherwise liotering ,protesting,hanging out..will not be tollerated,,


then an hour later the same news stated several other landmanagment people were clearing thier propertiestoo
 
No Black Friday shopping for me. I don't do it, have never done it, and I think it's gotten way out of hand. It was neat to see stores that normally open at 10AM open at 7AM, but now they are opening at 4AM, some at 2AM and a few at midnight. If I go shopping on Friday it will be during normal business hours and it will be for something I need, like new Christmas lights to replace the ones I bought last year but mysteriously ceased functioning while being stored.
 
No sale shopping here.

The biggest problem with these sales/stores/customers, is NO ONE considers the people who have to work at these stores. My wife is one of them. I never see her at holiday meals anymore, she has to work those days. And she always comes home tired out and in a bad mood from having to put up with the pure animals who shop on these days. I remember, and miss, the times when stores were closed on Sundays and holidays. She has to work Thanksgiving day from 10am till 7pm, then be back clocked in at 3:45am, and work till 1pm on Black Friday. We live 1/2 hour from her store. My daughter has to go through the same thing where she lives/works, except she lives and hour from her store, and she's the manager!

And DON'T ANY ONE comment that she "doesn't have to work there, or that she can get another job somewhere else." You may have been able to change jobs with ease, and little or no consequence back then, but today, that argument falls very short.

Sorry to sound like I have a chip on my shoulder about these, but I do.
 
Can't stand Black Friday

I used to work in a 24hr Walmart SuperCenter. Had the misfortune to work 2 Black Friday's before I left there. I can tell ya, people are animals when it comes to BF. Sales don't start until 6am, but the store is open so people are in wandering around for hours waiting for the sales to start, and of course they think they can go ahead and get the sales items because "Well, the store IS open!" They will argue with you, scream at you, call you every name in the book if you dare to tell them they can't have it until the sale starts. Then when it does start, get the hell out of the way because they will push, shove, punch, rip it out of someone else's hands, and in general be the rudest most obnoxious people they can be. Ugh. I don't even leave the house until BF is all but over.
 
I'll do like I always do on BF. Stay home and work on some leftover pecan pie. If I can get the kids off the tv, I might even watch the Firefly dvd set.
 
If I do any shopping, it will be online; most likely Amazon.com. There's NO way I would venture out in the madness of traffic in Fort Myers, FL, ESPECIALLY on Black Friday. You couldn't pay me enough to do that. Nope.

The snow birds here are the absolute worst drivers I have ever seen. Even worse than the bozos in Atlanta, and that's pretty bad.

If I go anywhere, it will be on a bike path.

My wife and I were talking about this when we found out the local grocery store is now staying open all day on Thanksgiving. That is really not necessary. Let these people have the holiday. Of course I think Thanksgiving in particular gets the short shrift in the rush to the December holidays.
 
My personal experience with Black Friday, is that if you are willing to let the initial surge in the wee hours of the morning go through, and you're willing to be dissapointed on a couple items, you can coast through the store at a reasonable hour and most of the "deals" will still be around. So, you get a more relaxed experience, and can still pick up some things significantly reduced. Also, I've found that manners go a long way with employee's that day. Simple courtesy can result in someone finding "that last bit of stock" stowed away somewhere.

Always shop with a smile!

And of course....buy online when you can.
 
I treated myself with an early Christmas present and bought a bottle of Makers Mark and will sit at the PC on BF and after and sip on a little whiskey over ice and shop away . My wife has tried to get me out shopping early for several years now and I occasionally venture out with her half way through the season and that is it for me .

Astoroth, that is where my wife works now, in customer service, no less. She is going out the door as I type. You are so right about everything. Even in the upscale neighborhoods, which are sometimes the worst!!

If we didn't need the money, she wouldn't be there.

I do all my shopping online, now.

So far, our local grocery store has been able to resist the temptation, and they are always congratulated for it by the townsfolk. And well supported the rest of the year. (We've had two other major brand grocery stores come and go while this store, Fareway, has been here the longest. They are always closed on Sundays, and all major holidays. And their employees are very loyal.

Walmart used to be very family oriented, especially with it's employees, until Sam Walton died. Then it became nothing but the bottom line, period.

Unfortunately, I have to drive 50+ miles to get to any other major store, and the few local stores never have what I'm after, so...
