A Call to Arms...!!!!!

The only weird thing I noticed during the install was that instead of a copy of the cfs3config.exe in the new Rising Sun folder there was just a non-working shortcut file pointing to itself. Once I copied cfs3config.exe by hand from the original folder and ran it everything was fine.
 
Is the Theater Selector supposed to be working yet? It crashes the game anytime I select anything other than Pearl. Everything is in the default location with nothing modified. Ran the first seven installs, then the game once, then number 8.

The Theatre Selector works well, please check
that these seven items were done in your install;
(esp. #5)

1. CFS3 must be in C:/Program Files/Microsoft Games/Combat Flight Simulator 3
2. 7 parts run in sequence (can be directed to non-std location)
3. MultiCFS3 directed to proper AppData (or Doc&Set/U/Application Data/MS)
4. cfs3config.exe and cfs3.exe RUN from INSIDE main folder, then shut down
5. Main Folder 'Rising_Sun_Theater_Selector' EDIT (7x) to your AppData
6. Uisel-Installer_part_8 directed to proper AppData
7. Edit (7x) AppData folder if not standard location as shown in step 1.

Yes, all of that was completed just as you per the original instructions.

What I discovered was that the text in the Theater Bat file didn't match the path that the default MultiCFS3 was using in that it was looking in the Administrator path like the way Installer part 8 had been set up rather than the User path. Once I edited the Theater Bat file to use the MultiCFS3 default location (i.e. the User path) it started working fine.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun________

needed to be changed to

C:\Users\Dads Win7\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\CFS3 PTO Rising Sun________

both during Installer Part 8 and manually in the Theater Bat file.

I guess I was just confused by leaving everything to install at the default locations to avoid conflicts, when some of the hardwired defaults in the installer were not the same as what Win 7 was using as defaults for the CFS3 install.

MajorMagee, it says in the instructions that it doesn't work in XP Home versions. It may well be the same for all home versions. I will have it tested in Win 7 Home Premium and let you know. Thanks for the feedback.
 
Appdata path

I do have Windows 7 and have been experimenting a bit with this:-

Because of the way RS works, the Appdata path is vitally important, but every user has a different user name. I might use DAD, Kasey might use Grizz, another might be GrumpyOldGit. If you have a way to program this into the installer, I'm sure Rob would love to hear from you.

A useful shortcut I've rediscovered is the use of environment variables. In the address bar of a Windows Explorer window, type %appdata% - on pressing carriage return your user's Appdata folder will be displayed. Double-click on the Microsoft folder therein and then on CFS3 PTO Rising Sun________ and the Explorer window will be showing your user's Rising Sun appdata folder's contents. (tadaaa...!)

Now click in the address bar - but not on the text shown there - and the correct Appdata address will be highlighted. Copy this (Control-C) and you can now paste this address into the edits in your Rising_Sun_Theater_Selector.bat file as well as when installing Part 8 of RS.

This tip ought to work in XP, Vista and Windows 7 - I can vouch for Vista, since that's what grandma's pooter is running as I type this.

Major, are you running 64-bit Win7? If you are, you have to force Windows to install CFS3 in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games - by default it will install in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games. I had exactly the same problem as you and CFS3Config was not to be found, only a shortcut to a PTO Solomons folder which doesn't exist on my system. I don't know yet whether anything else was missing.
The alternative is to copy your vanilla CFS3.1a folder to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games.

The Mole Fix is only usable in XP Professional and any version of Windows that supports folder and file encryption. I'm pretty sure Win7 Home Premium doesn't. EDIT: Business, Enterprise and Ultimate versions of Win7 support encryption, not Home Premium or Starter.

You're right about the original CFS3 Win 7 64 bit install defaulting to (x86), and I didn't even think about that being a potential problem, since the part 1 of part 1 installer didn't seem to care. I wonder what else got missed? Perhaps I should start all over again...

It didn't seem to care, but I did notice the DOS box reported lots of files not found instead of copying them as it would normally. I'd start again too...
 
Groan...

Actually this is nothing compared to figuring out that CFS3 wouldn't run at all on my machine unless I limited it to 1 of the 4 processors, and never exit from the UI screen.
 
There are some pilots missing in the characters folder;none of the british pilots show up in the cockpit.:monkies:

Hi

I don't know if you have to force CFS3 to be installed into C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games. I think all you have to do is have CFS3 installed as normal in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games. Go there and copy the main game folder to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games.

Once the folder is copied there you can run the PTO-RS install and it will grab the files it needs. Once done you can delete the CFS3 main game folder from C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games as it is not needed any more

Hi Guys,

Not sure what has happened but it appears there are a number of characters that have not been installed.

You can get them from your ETO installs if you have ETO.

popkov
raskov
Veenstra

were working on a hotfix to be released in the very near future, I have just uploaded these characters to the FTP site to be added to the hotfix.
