European Flying

I'm looking to start back flying a lot more in Europe. . .a region I haven't flown in for years actually. Since all I have right now is default scenery there what would be a better first investment, some quality mesh or new ground textures? I can't do both as I figure either one of those is gonna drain my wallet good, so I want to go slow. Thanks for any suggestions.:salute:

Try the following to get started. I'll let others make additional recommendations for the side of things pertaining to wider coverage.

The Netherlands
http://www.nl-2000.com/nuke/

Norway:
See the relevant post further down in this FSX forum (http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?61206-Fly-Norway!) , in addition...
http://www.freewarescenery.com/fsx/norway.html
...grab the Norway Scenic X package from the above link, and the Mesh package from the FS2004-era Norway directory on this webpage.

Quality scenery isn't exclusive to the payware realm.

Thanks Sean, got em'!!

I'd get Ultimate Terrain Europe to start with. That will give you the most comprehensive update on the default MS look of things in one product and at one price.

If you want real detail then you'll have to invest in quite a few separate products. For France you have all the FranceVFR products, for the UK the Horizon VFR Photographic sceneries and the UK2000 airports, for Germany the German Airports series by Aerosoft and th VFR Germany series, for Switzerland there is Switzerland Pro, for the mountain areas (Alps and Pyrenees) there's France VFR for the French Alps and FSAddon Publishing for the Italian Alps (DolomitiX), and a product for Austria which publisher escapes me right now.

There is freeware mesh on the market too.

Oh, and last but not least, you can now get FScene replacement textures for a really cheap price for all of Europe! Check out simMarket!

The Norwegian coast is awesome to work your way up North. Dutchieland already got recommended. Remember it is superflat but with NL2000 is actually is pretty cool plus you do get some awesome military bases to fly out of.

I mostly use photoreal terrain in Europe. England, NL, Germay. That's where I fly and Austria and Switzerland.

Thanks Francois, Ultimate Terrain Europe was the way I was leaning for the first big purchase. The others I will pick up whenever the money allows it.:salute:

To stay on the freeware side:

- I agree with the recommendation above for Norway. Norway Scenic X, Norway mesh (made for FS9 I believe, but it's good in FSX too), Airports of Norway, and Airstrips of Norway. I call this bundle "the freeware european OrbX".

- get that freeware mesh for the Alps (LOD11): http://www.vf-air.com/MeshAlpes.zip

- get the freeware switzerland landclass that was made for FS9, it will work perfectly in FSX, and will make Switzerland look much better, using the default textures in a very realistic way: http://www.flightsim.com/file.php?cm=SEARCH1&fname=ebch3tot.zip

With those addons, Swiss will become a very cool place for low and slow flight, especially for gliding etc... The aera around Alpnach, Buochs, Interlaken and Meiringen is especially recommended :)

For the French part of the Alps, I would recommend the freeware "altiports" that brings sloped runways like Megeve, Courchevel etc...
On this site:
http://translate.google.fr/translat...tf=1&u=http://www.vf-air.com/FSX2.htm&act=url
(translated automatically in English).
Scroll down, it's not so easy to find the sceneries, but you're looking for:
- the VF-AIR object library ( http://www.vf-air.com/VF-AIR.zip )
- the "Altiport" package.

Ah, and the most important thing: you don't think about flying though mountains without installing the FSX mountain mod first ;) I presented it a long time ago, right here:
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforu...re-addon-for-changing-the-mountain-rendering-!
Be sure to set FTX Central to "Default FSX" before installing that mod.

Ed....first off don't scare me like that with your other post!!! Almost fell over when I saw the headline. As far as Europe goes.......AERSOFT has awesome Germany stuff....I had most of it for FS9 and may now end up getting it for FSX.

If you get all of those you could have saved the money and booked an actual trip to Europe..

I think GEX Europe is a good 2nd investment behind UTX Europe. Some don't like the look of GEX but I think it's great.

I can't stand the default look anymore (spoiled, I know) and the combination of UTX and GEX bring a very large area up to snuff. I have Europe and N. A. covered by both with other payware and freeware scenery over top. This way the view on flights between smaller sceneries look good too. Now that I think of it this combination is basically my "default" now. Everywhere I fly is covered by UTX/GEX or is in the Tongass/PNW regions.

A lot of freeware airports seem to blend pretty well with GEX too so that is a bonus. I have a lot of cool freeware in the UK (including your Charlton field, a favourite) and GEX/UTX packages it all up nicely. My first ever payware was FSGenesis mesh for the whole world so that helps too.

Ed,

Along with UTX for land class, you need to get GEX Europe for textures. UTX and GEX transform the default scenery. They're outstanding! Also Scenery Tech has a nice landclass that compliments UTX. Finally, if you want an airport to stage out of to explore southern Europe, try Aerosoft's Gibraltar X.

Joe

That would also work, but I thought you were working just the eastern US?:salute:

Krazy old men can do some krazy things... :mixedsmi:

UTX-Europe gets a vote from me, DUH! It packs a little more performance hit then the North American products, primarily because some areas are really packed with changes.

If you look at and decide on the Netherlands NL-2000 4.02 release you use a torrent client to download it (safe) and for about the next week or so I'm leaving my system on overnight to help "seed" the torrent. I'm up and above 100% on all the files, but a few pennies more electricity at night is my way of saying Thanks to the NL-2000 dev. team.

And there's a freeware package for Central/South America available improving the landscape. I'll get it installed after the college football bowl games are over. Just curious about it, ya know... :bump:
