A new plane is born... Avelina

Lionheart

SOH-CM-2014
Hey all,

For those of you that do not know, I have been working hard on a new plane, the Avelina project. Avelina is Italian, meaning small bird. I had wanted to create my own custom, futuristic 4 seater aircraft, something that was so far different from all the rest. I had been reading much about electric planes, fuel cell planes, hybrids and bio fuel diesels, etc. I wanted something that could rank up there with a small turboprop in performance and be a 'green' class aircraft. Many systems were considered. I finally fell upon an electric plane, with battery packs a bit smaller then brief cases, spread out in the wings and front nose, and have optional wing mounted solar arrays as well as a 'nearly silent' mini jet turbine in a sound box up front that is geared into a generator. The APU recharger would run on new Bio fuels, and have a system that could detect fuel types and change injector settings on the fly. Also, a wind turbine generator that retracts up into the tail was included for high descents, slow flights and aero braking. The motors on the market presently get up to 200 HP, there abouts. So I figured upon a dual motor setup, 2 X 200 HP aircooled motors (most today are water cooled, too heavy for my liking). The dual motor setup is managed by the power computer and only runs one motor at full time, and the secondary at 50% plus power settings. The motor assignment flips each time the plane is flown, so motor 1 today becomes motor 2 tomorrow. This keeps them wearing evenly.

I also wanted some cool things, like roll down windows (like the classic planes had), and 'glass' like on iPhones, super lite weight, non scratch Alumino-Silica flex material that can be made thin and has good noise cancellation and a great life span (compared to Plexi). I wanted retractable landing gear, an 'extreme' computer system that is more wild then some of todays cars, an aircon system, entertainment system that can play music, CD's, internet, movies, etc. I wanted leather, a steering wheel like a Porsche Cayan, and even a joystick in the back that passengers can use (when security is activated) that would allow them to fly the plane from the back seat. This would be great for training, kids, and emergencies.

So, with all of that said, you now have a plane that can fly on electrics, at cruise, at 175 knots, for roughly 500 nautical miles, on battery power alone. You can land, and if equipped with solar cells, have it recharged in a day, free, by the sun. You can fly it, park it, fly it, and not fill it with any gas whatsoever. You should never need to use the APU recharger, which itself runs on a future American bio fuel.

Next...... (there's more).

On the flight sim front concerning FS2004, (my fave sim), we have broken the record of Polygon limits. We can now make 1 million poly models for FS9 that run great. The old record or 'limit' was 65,000 polys, and that was for both the interior and exterior models 'combined'. The FSDS build system did this perfect, but for Gmax, it had a bug. After a certain point, the model became unstable and parts would relocate sideways and out of place. We found the bug just a couple of months ago. It was driving me nuts, and I prayed ALOT about it, and the Lord heard my prayers.... :)

So now, I have a plane (model) that I had no limits on for its structure, and some new animation technology (code work) that gives me the ability to hide assemblies, another that has wing flex that operates on speed and G-loads, and a TON of code for a new computer system that has some 30 pages of info and data in it.

With that... I give you the Avelina 'Elektra' RG, Alpha series... The hybrid plane concept of tomorrow.

I hope you like it. I have a blast flying it around. Testing it was crazy as I was having too much fun just flying it. She reminds me slightly of the Kodiak in the way you can man-handle her, putting her nose up and dropping her down onto the runway. She fly's pretty good.

I have done a HUGE manual on how everything works on it. There is alot to the system, how it all functions. Many old world pilots (WWII fans) will not want this. Its a future bird, its beyond Garmin panels, its like mixing a 2020 BMW with a Cirrus, its like....... Something totally totally different. Off world would be a good word for it.

She has systems for instance that auto-raise the gear if you leave them down and pass through 150 knots. I 'ding' lets you know you are passing through 85 knots, when airborne, so if you are decellerating and pass through 85, your font goes yellow, a neat little ding sounds, and you are aware you are entering low speed flight. An automatic pressurization system activates at 7,000 feet, and can be set from 6,000 to 9,000 feet pressure zones. She has a cool auto pilot system called 'Cruise Control' that is jokingly called 'Android Mode'. You have dual AP settings, quick sets for ALT, ASI, VSI, HDG, and then you have 'settable' sections in the AP where you can preset settings and keep them unactive till needed.

Its alot of work, coding, painting, poly work, advanced model technology, advanced animation technology, and alot of cool sound effects and things. Even the computer screen can be tinted with 4 various settings. The main screen can be changed on its graphics background (wallpaper/theme), the pilots can be changed out (male, female, couple). Luggage added, tie down mode, custom soundpack with electric whir sounds, etc, etc, etc....

So here she is. Avelina.

now that..... i'm getting! great work as Always Bill! :salute:

well i will when TFSS makes it active.... :icon_lol:

Many thanks guys.

Its not going to appeal to the genders that are into fighter planes, fighter jets. This is for the pilots that are into general aviation and like the fluid shapes of the Cirrus, Lancair, and Dynamic. She is for hopping to cities and practicing Navigation, rough weather flight scenarios, etc.

no guns... <sigh... >

But....! She has beeps and whistles, cool animations and things. She is 'new', fresh, undiscovered territory...

she looks Fantastic Bill, the kind of thing i wouldn't mind touring in, rest assured she'll get herself a new Hangar made at my field with solar panels on the roof, she deserves it!

had TFSS page open hitting refresh for last 6 hours, also in cart is the WT-9 which i will love as it's more akin to what i get to fly in real-world with a buddy...

again, beautiful work! now back to hitting F5 to refresh the TFSS page every 5mins :icon_lol:

Wow! This is an amazing example of designer effort. Aside from teh beauty of the modeling and textures, your yeoman's work in XML should have cost a few more wirey eyebrows.

I agree with your statements but just the same, one should experience this aircraft and its features. You might also market to the younger jet set who would love the technology theme. :)

Best of luck on this, another winner for you Bill. :medals: :applause:

Many thanks Milton.

It was about time that I learned code. I should have done that years ago.

Thanks Matt,

Adrian was emailed yesterday, but I believe he has gone on a short trip and will be back soon, probably tomorrow. Hang in there.

The Dynamic was pretty fun to create, having the factory to help us in directions, and Dynon sending Dwight a working computer driving actual gauge to work from. The GPS is not highly detailed as like the real one, but works. The Dynon has all the cool features in it, sub menu's and various settings. She is a fun plane to fly.

For a sport aviation class aircraft, they are very very fast. The RG runs about 130 to 140 knots! Thats danged fast for a lite plane. She can get to 150 if you push it.

Its funny. We did the 'breaking of the Poly barrier' with the Dynamic and Boeing 797, (first with the 797 wing, to work out the Gmax issues) and found after making the Dynamic for FS9 at 513,000 Polys, that it wouldnt run through the FSX Gmax exporter, lol... I had to shed some parts out.

We have since learned that it is a 32bit driver issue, as the model is built suspended in memory, and it maxxes out as a regular computer can only hold so much virtual memory, no matter how much RAM you have. They are making a new compiler for FSX now that is 64 bit which will now allow for 1/2 million plus Polygon models to make it through with no issues.

We had always thought that super-Poly models would run poorly or not at all in FS, but on the contrary, they run brilliant. Reminds me of when mankind broke the sound barrier. They thought it would tare holes in the atmosphere, distort the Universe, cause people to blend into the metal (kidding) and all sorts of other fears, but in the end, you just pass through it, and suddenly the bird is calm and smooth again. :D

It's great to see such an adventurous and yet plausible new aircraft for FS9, thank you Bill!

p.s. there's a typo at the top of the Avelina web page - exercise is mis-spelt.

Many thanks guys.

I am sorry to correct you Bill but I think you may be wrong. :salute: I love fighter planes and have many books and videos about them and have the best ones for FSX.

I have almost zero GA planes other than your Epic LT, Epic Victory and Kodiak. Planes that help me forget real life issues and make me feel 10 years old again.

Here I am stalking info on the Avelina in the fs2004 forum.

Why? Your planes are simply awesome! :applause:

(Just waiting for the FSX version - I have already read the whole manual)

Abso-freakin-lutely amazing Bill. That's all I can say right now. I am a lover of round engines and round gauges, sure, but this plane is just so...so...so...beyond anything else that I have seen. You seem to have accomplished the near impossible. You have rendered me speechles. BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!

Hi Bill,

while I am usually drawn more to the classics with at least one radial engine and preferably two or more tails I absolutely like the progressive thought you have clearly put into this new aircraft. So I will definitely warm up the digits for this one.

In real life I would not trade my Saratoga for a Cirrus under any circumstance. I have flown both, worked on both with my trusty AP. But the Cirrus and airplanes like the "Avelina" are what GA will need to survive. They are the machines that attract new people into GA, not 30 or 40 year old designs.
Those new aviators might then eventually discover the classics and want to fly a Beaver, 195 or Bellanca.... but the modern transport types are going to be what brings them in.

Cheers
Stefan

Hey guys,

I have had a couple of emails about the FAQ section at the Avelina webpage. I would like to clear that up.

I had 'aforementioned' questions and answers concerning the FSX bird, which is not done yet. It states in the sales section also that the FSX version model set is not yet available. Just to let you know, this is true that the FSX model is not finished yet. I have added points in the FAQ section on the Avelina to mention that the FSX version, though it is in the FAQ section, is not yet ready, not available.

A few more days gang. Getting everything into the FSX format now. Its already compiling, and is about 35% completed in the transfer.

It's in my hangar, and I am having an identity crisis...
Part of me goes Noooo when the wheels come down by themselves, part goes Yaaay when I see a cockpit taking ergonomic cues from some decent automotive practice.

Some pretty tricky gauge work and modelling... congratulations Bill, another unique addition to the skies.

Now... how about if I plug an iPad into my computer's USB port, the one on the back seat comes alive?? ;)

Man, that would be cool! Presenlty, you can only do so much with gauges, especially in FS9. You 'can' put the map on there, the GPS, but I dont believe you can create a desktop on there.

The iPads are illuminated during night flying, by the way, the appearance of 'on' is enhanced. There is a secondary iPad at the pilots feet, right side cargo net.

The time when the 'gear auto deploy' becomes a hassle is when you want to buzz the terrain really low. It keeps dropping the gear when under 200 feet ALT. The gear also auto-retracts when you pop over 150 knots, which is when the main gear 'doors' (bolted to the sides of the main gear) will start wanting to peal off, wobbling around, etc. So the airframe computer raises them up. I didnt do this with flaps though. I have an alert icon that shows up over the flaps mini readout center, but the flaps are designed to act as spoilers and I wanted people to be able to use them at 150 knots, one notch only of flaps to help slow them down. That is their primary function, though they do provide some lift.

We did have a cool ILS auto land system that Dwight made from scratch. Some impressive programming, but it had a couple of bugs we needed to work out, so it was left out for now till we get it working. It did alot of things, like bring you down close, drop the throttle, auto deploy flaps in set amounts, etc, etc. For now, we have regular ILS, and we have an ILS view screen build into the HSI infocenter page that comes up and shows you a target to fly the plane into, a yellow diamond that is the ILS target zone. Watching the plane fly into the target 'automatically' is a bit cool. The future of aviation.... What will it be like.

Great repaints I see uploaded!
I am puzzled: the FS9 texture folder is almost double the size of the FSX flavour!
Why's this?
I am puzzled #2: how come there's a joystick between the back-seaters?
Can they do flight simulation on the iPad? ;)

In FSX, the Sim can reach into multiple folders within the main aircraft folder for textures. That way, you can put the common textures, like the VC and landing gear, into just one folder. After that, the only thing needed in the rest of the paints are the repainted exterior files. FSX uses a fallback system configured by a cfg file in the texture folder itself.

FS9 can also do this to a more limited degree. Gnoopy's B-29 Mania series had several texture files that were intended for the main Texture folder in the FS9 root. That folder is a hard-coded "fallback" location for any texture file not found in an aircraft's texture folder.
