I keep getting the message that "CFS2 HAS ENCONTERED A PROBLEM" when any action really gets going. I am running XP on an old dell with 400 watts, 1gb video, 3 gb ram, on a fresh upload of the OS. I have always run in to this problem. Any suggestion? ( i can not buy a new computer )

1. How many aircraft do you have installed? I think CFS2 throws that fit if you have nearly or over 100.

2. How many ships do you have installed? CFS2 also throws a fit if you have too many.

3. How many DP object do you have? See Questions 1 and 2 for the rest of number 3.

Doesn't sound like your computer is the issue.

I'm with Wulf190 on this. Doesn't sound like your machine.

I would also check all of the aliasing in your aircraft. I don't alias anything to anything. I have full sound and panels in each aircraft.
Check your ships folder and make sure all of your ships have a panel and sound folder and in each there is a notepad document named whatever you want. I name mine panel.txt and sound.txt. Newer windows OS do not copy empty folders. So, if panel and sound in ships do not have some txt file in them, they do not copy over and your ships have Model and Texture but no Panel and Sound folders. CFS2 does not like that.

... I have always run in to this problem...

MB,

I have to disagree with the others here. The message "CFS2 HAS ENCOUNTERED A PROBLEM" is generally related to a hardware hiccup when it occurs during heavy action. Having been in your spot before on a lesser machine, your comment (above in bold) sounds very reminiscent of some frequent past problems with memory leaks and processor loading. I surmised that the machine just couldn't handle the rapid loading and processing of all those intense effects as the action heated up. Complex (or even improperly formatted) DP's that come with add-ons can cause these messages on lesser machines. Moreover, background programs can sometimes add to system loading and resources availability, especially AV/firewall security when it tries to scan every single file that the sim calls up on the fly (an easy fix - just set the AV program to ignore everything in the CFS2 folder and its sub-folders).

My problems greatly diminished as i continually upgraded the critical components of my previous old rig piece by piece, i.e CPU, video card and memory modules. On the surface you seem to have sufficient hardware, but as i learned, just having adequate types of hardware and memory capacity sometimes doesn't cut it. There are just times when you need the better grades of such equipment for handling the heavy loading. After many useful upgrades to the old girl, i finally just built an entire rig with high end stuff and that settled it for good.

Your old Dell probably has a scalable motherboard which means you don't necessarily need a brand new computer, just gradually upgrade to a newer, stronger processor, better gaming-quality memory and maybe even a higher end graphics card - all compatible with your old motherboard of course - as your budget allows. These components can always be purchased piecemeal at bargains if you do some shopping around and don't try to get the latest, greatest thing. But a warning here: i once made the mistake of upgrading to a high end graphics card that i presumed was indeed compatible with my mobo, according to specs, but turned out to be another source of trouble in CFS2. So be extra careful in mating the new parts.

One thing i know from experience, if this is an ongoing error message that you get in almost any intense combat scenario regardless of location or objects used, tweaking sim objects won't help. You have a system related problem in graphical processing. Short of hardware upgrades, you could also try going into the sim's SETTINGS and reducing image quality and scenery density, but the trade-off is obvious. But in the long run, you'll still need to sort out the communication between your sim and your hardware configuration.

Hey Bearcat,

What AV program are you running? Do you recomend upgrading to Windows 7?

Ryan

Ryan, i use Avast! Internet Security (for combined AV & additional firewall protection). Covers me well and runs smoothly in the background with a very light footprint. But as a rule, i still don't allow it any real-time or automatic scanning access to any of my gaming folders. As for the preferred OS, my choice for CFS2 is XP Professional SP3. With the right hardware, its a rock-solid winner for me as far as CFS2 is concerned. Win7 is a good buy also, but its security technology and structural hard code is a little beyond CFS2 and this can cause a wee bit of aggravation for some.

Hey Bearcat,

What AV program are you running? Do you recomend upgrading to Windows 7?

Ryan

Ryan,
Windows 7 is a resource hog. If you are not running dual core or quad core, with 4+ Gigs of RAM and a vid card with onboard, non-shared 1 GB of dedicated Vid RAM, Windows 7 is not for you. I have Win 7 X 64 on the laptop and Win 7 X 32 on the PC. I am getting ready to upgrade ram on the PC from 4 Gigs (sees 3.33) to 6 Gigs and switch out the 32 bit to 64 bit. If I were able, I would put 6-8 Gigs of RAM on the laptop, but I have been unable to find 4Gig sticks for the laptop. It has 2 RAM docks, one under the keyboard and one on the bottom. I currently have 2X2Gig sticks. Everything I have read online, I can upgrade it to 8 Gigs max with my current bios, which is the last bios Dell put out. But then, Dell says that I cannot use Windows 7 on here, let alone Windows 7X64. Mine works flawlessly. I found all the drivers I needed online.

My laptop: Dell Inspiron 1721, AMD Turion Core 2 duo, 2.0 Gig CPU, ATI Radeon 1250 onboard vid with 256 Mb Vid RAM with shared to 512, showing 320Mb. 2 SATA 500 Gig HDs, 4 Gigs RAM. The onboard vid card is the real weakness in the laptop. I would love to have at least a 2.4 Gig CPU and a better vid card with more onboard dedicated vid RAM for Windows 7.

I agree with Bearcat241 on XP. On my 2nd HD on both Laptop and PC I have XP multimedia. Even though it only sees 3.33 Gigs of RAM, it is much less of a resource hog than Windows 7. CFS2 is maxed out on all settings on both OS and works better in XP.

Hey Bearcat,

Is that Xp Pro 64 bit you are running?

If so where can I buy that?

Thanks,

Ryan

No, i'm running 32-bit. I enjoy working with MDLC, which doesn't like 64 bit machines and since i'm running high-grade Corsair gaming memory, i don't mind the memory limitations imposed by XP. Even with the sims running i still have more than 2 GB RAM in reserve resources.
