Instant Scenery Question

falcon409

SOH-CM-2025
I posted this over on the SimFlight Forum in hopes of getting an answer quickly, but the traffic over there isn't very high so I thought I'd try here as well.

Almost 2 years ago I posted a similar problem on Simflight and with some help found the solution. That problem is back again but the original solution no longer works. Here's what I have:
I am in the final stages of building a temporary "Emma Field". I have used a photoreal ground texture and autogen trees placed with the Annotator. Objects are all derived from either default scenery objects or those available through download as freeware and placed using Instant Scenery 1.04. I have used AFX 1.10a to locate the runway and parking ramp.

There are several areas where the trees will only show when I load Instant Scenery and then the scenery file for Emma. When I close out IS and reload the sim, the trees are gone again. Originally I discovered that objects placed with IS have a boundary box that will eliminate any autogen close to them. I was shown the check box to fix that and that is what I've done in this case, but as I said, this time it isn't working. . . .even with all the boundary boxes set to allow autogen the trees still refuse to show.

Is there something else I'm missing here?

Just a few things that might be suggested that I've also checked and eliminated:
I did have some exclude boxes in AFX that were hidden, I removed those but no change.
I have tried moving the scenery folder from an outside directory to the main Addon Scenery folder in FSX, also no change.

I certainly don't know as much about this as you do, but try building a small road with AFX that goes into the area where your scenery won't behave. The road will assume the flatten that you built for the runway, and maybe your scenery will like that. I've had some head scratchers where it seemed like the program was daring me to come up with something tricky in order to make things work.

It's just a thought, and may not do didly for you. Good luck, we're all counting on you.:icon29:

When you mention exclude boxes in AFX, what type? Any flattens?

If you take the AFX file completely out of an active scenery folder are your trees back?

From an earlier (several days removed) version I had several excludes to knock out trees that were encroaching on the parking ramp. . . .when I was thinking I could just use the existing ground texture as the basis for the parking ramp and taxiways. I decided against that after seeing the "grass" texture in the ramp and taxiway. Just didn't care for the look. I went with taxiways and parking ramps drawn in AFX. . . but no flattens in AFX (I have also removed the exclude boxes in AFX as well). The flattens were done in SBuilderX. Initially, using a suggestion from IanP I made a sloped flatten to try to better control the undulating terrain in the area. That didn't completely work because the very center of that sloped flatten. . . .of course. . . .was not really "flat". So I drew a second poly just encompassing the runway and parking ramp, set it as a "hole" and knocked that portion out of the sloped flatten. Then I highlited the hole gave it a flatten, single elevation and voila', sloped sides to the outter edges and a perfectly flat area just where I needed it. That's where I am right now.

As for the other question. . . .haven't tried that yet, but I'm about to, lol. Thanks for the suggestion.:salute:

Take a look at the image below. . . .see that guy in the shorts? That's what caused about 10 trees to not display, lol. I went back and went object by object in the area where the trees were missing looking for one that I might have missed when setting them to "allow autogen". He was the only one I didn't get and once I set it correctly, restarted FSX and loaded that flight. . . .all the missing trees were back. There's something very wrong when a single little object like that can take out 50yds of trees, lol.
