Rise of Flight will add a Channel Map in 2012....

I think I'll take a chance and pre-order, as the 777 team have never disapointed me so far! If anyone doubts wether ROF is a simulator, they really should try flying the RE8, it's a challenge just flying it (lack of power easy to stall), and I often use it to just fly around the scenery, without shooting at anything. The realism often feels better than FSX (thats my opinion) and as the most basic version of the game is free, what's to lose by trying it?

Ok, what planes are the best for dogfights? For bombing? I don't want to buy all of those planes yikes!
 
I love the concept of the game, but I can't run it... Even with everything turned all the way down, it's still a slideshow on my computer! :icon_lol:

I do enjoy seeing pictures and watching videos of ROF, so please post 'em often! :mixedsmi:
 
This game is sweet... but my first foray into the world of WWI dog fighting didn't end well lol... I was able to make a landing after my vertical stabilizer was damaged but then I nosed over lol!

I got my saitek rudders working, with ch throttle and ffb2 stick, and I got TIR 5 working yay! TIR is a must imho...

It all comes down to how much money you want to spend. I have the original release version plus the extra planes that I have bought. I think if I was you I'd pay 10$ for the Iron Cross edition, it really is a bargin.

Bleh, IMPULSE BUY lol! Bought the one off amazon for 10 bucks... that's worth it! Maybe I'll get that bristol later on once I figure out how to actually shoot someone down...
 
I'm not about to get pulled into the ol' game/simulator debate but for 10 bucks it's very tempting. HOWEVER, is it still neccessary to connect to their server to "authenticate" before you can run it? This is a deciding factor for me as lots of times I don't have internet access.

I don't know the official answer. But initially you probably would to activate. But other than that, I see two login choices on the main menu. 1) Login online 2) Login offline

Also, FWIW, I would totally buy this again from Amazon... their download policy is great - unlimited downloads for personal use.

You need an Internet connection to set it up initially, but you can play disconnected once you have set up your account and updated the sim.

So newbie RoF flyers, what's the verdict? I hope it's brought you the same amount to enjoyment, frustration, anger, anticipation and ultimately reward, that it's brought myself.

Kidding, though would like to hear your feedback. I hope it demonstrated to you far more as a sim than a game, as originally thought. No sarcasm intended, just hoping to have changed your views on an excellent simulaton, unless you've been too engrossed in making those great paints for the Bronco.

True. RoF is my personal number 1 in the flight sims genre. I have been using it from the initial launch in June 2009. The game changed a lot since the version 1.00. After 23 updates which are fixing bugs and are adding new features and content, RoF is a very mature sim now.
It is also nice that you can download it for free and you get two flyables - SPAD 13 and Albatros D.Va. The career mode is working as well as the multiplayer. The DLC is pretty cheap compared to the FSX addons and the quality is very high. Those of you who are using FSX should not have problems with the RoF's performance.
As a member of cyber squadron, I fly RoF almost daily and take part in some tournaments, like Flaming Eagles Online War being developed by the Italian "Corpo Aeronautico Italiano" or in Bloody April 1917 being developed by virtual Jasta 5.

It's a superb work. It can be a game, a simulator, and anywhere in between, depending on how you dial in the realism setting. I have them maxed out, total physics, all limitations, no labels, etc, etc. Amazing how quickly you learn to recognize a Neiuport from an Albatross at extreme distance.

Nobody's mentioned sound yet....it's very,very good. If you've got a decent audio set-up, it's the unpredictable flak that'll snap loose your adrenaline when a thunderclap suddenly goes off right next to your plane, the shrapnel whistling between the wings. Learn to zig-zag that plane as second nature. Attacking on observation balloon? Keep an eye peeled, surely an enemy scout will sneak up behind you while you fixate on your target, they've very good at it.

I also find it sobering. The death of an aircraft is explicit, a grimly intimate affair. I'm working trough a career in 1916, my Neiuport 17c taking on mostly Albatross II & III's. When one lights an opponent on fire, it's very realistic, and not overdone in a game sense. It's portrayed well enough to leave you pondering what a grizzly way it is to die. If you're at altitude, the poor devil takes forever to spiral down.

One enemy craft, after taking a lot of hits and bellowing smoke, leveled out. The pilot could be seen raising both hands in the air. I let him go, he landed in a field on my side of the line. Veeerrry interesting. If it happens again, I'll see if I can force him to a location of my choice.

I've had Rise of Flight about a week, certainly it's a big step forward in simulation/gaming. For me, easily, it's a keeper.

It comes in an email and also when you download using their downloader thingy...

About the offline use , I copied this from the manual:

3.2 Access method
The second time you run ROF on the User Authorization screen you can choose
one of two methods of entry into the game. They are Online and Offline mode.


Online Mode – This mode allows you to use all features of the game such as
Single-Missions, Quick Missions, Campaigns, Career and Multiplayer. This mode
requires a connection to the Internet at the initial login stage and during the
entire gaming session. Game stats are communicated to the Master Server and
Medals are awarded based on your performance.


Offline Mode – This mode allows you to login without the use of the Internet. This
mode limits your accessible features to Single-Missions, Quick Missions and
Campaign. Due to technical limitations, Career and Multiplayer modes are not
available online. Your game stats are saved on your machine until you Synchronize
them with the Master Server next time you decide to login under the Online Mode.
This mode comes in handy when your connection to the Internet is disrupted.

I like it a lot! I'm a terrible dogfighter at the moment. Finally shot down a plane today and landed safely! I want to buy a plane that I'll really like, something with altimeter and some sort of airspeed indicator. Have you veterans purchased those "Field Mods?" Are they any good and what do they do?

The graphics are solid, but imho the bloom (HDR) is a bit overkill. I'm using the highest setting, perhaps I should change to mono? On nice days the sky is very bright, almost too bright. In winter the HDR makes the scenery look worse.

I printed out the map found in the main directory... I've already used it a few times to navigate back to another airport. Of course there is a small map in game but I'm trying not to use that as much.

For $10 I'm very satisfied. Some of the default planes are really tricky to fly, like the Dr I... (that's the same version we have for FSX the Neoqb fokker) So far I'm enjoying the D.va alabtross.

I've got another Q for the veterans: When you buy a bomber or plane with turret gun can you sit in the turret and the AI controls the plane? Will the AI actively engage in dogfights while you're in the turret or bomb sight?
