• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

Attention Developers
This only applies to Stickies and Front Page News

The administrators of The Sim-Outhouse have implemented a new policy regarding “stickied” threads that announce new releases. You may have noticed a new section in the Forum index. The “What’s New” section will now contain the announcementsthat were once “stickied” in the other main sections. They will also be echoed via script to the website’s front page. Lastly, there will be no replies to the announcements in the new section. Separate threads may be started in the appropriate sections for discussion as before. Not just anyone will be able to access the section. Here are the requirements:

Who: First and foremost, SOH has always been member funded, so we also consider it member owned. Therefore, only Charter Members who are also either a developeror the designated member of a development group will get threads stickied or be granted access to the new section. If you are either a developer or dev. group member, PM an administrator so that we can get you added to the list of authorized users. Until that is sorted, you may still post in the appropriate forum. A staff member will move or copy the post to the “What’s New” section.

What: The title of the post should be short and to the point. We’d like titles like FS9 Payware Avelina, or FSX Freeware OV-10. The post should tell users where to get the package, and also provide a point of contact for support, whether that’s an email address, the developer’s own forum, or here at SOH. Please note that only freeware will be allowed to list SOH as a support contact. Note, special sales do not apply – only new releases.

I know bad rules when I see them. This is not bringing news to members, this is withholding them information. IMHO this eliminates in part the openness of these forums and results in only more restrictions and rules. Member owned? I don't recognize myself in these rules! I can only guess who originated this. Enough said.

It's certainly makes us 2nd class members think twice about uploading things and posting on these forums in future.

embarressing subject for some...

Okay, I understand the logic from both sides.

A site like this can't just run on thin air and my gratitude to the devoted, friendly people running SOH is expressed at every opportunity.

But there's more than just dollars, pounds and yen keeping this place alive and vibrant!
And its not just new hardware either.

As a 'blue-class' citizen living pretty well as a self-supporter in a land unfortunately on the verge of bankruptcy, the above clause could put myself and likeminded developers (Hmm...perhaps that's a title I dont deserve) out of business.

I always find money talk untoothesome...not that I haven't made some in my time (sure, had a rewarding 30 year career making plenty for my family to live comforatably) but a day came when I decided I needed more from life.
Not money - fast as I made the stuff, just kept going down the drain...my health with it,... new this, new that.
That mean't sacrifices (the old saying; can't have your cake and eat it).

Some even say; "Its not too late, you could be making a fortune with some of those sounds..."

Well I don't want a darn fortune and all that goes with it!
Putting a price on every item and activity in life and society nauseates me beyond words.

You see there are a whole host of enthusiastic folk developing marvelous addons via SOH because they feel at home here, and well...if they can't pay subscriptions for PERSONAL reasons, at least they can contribute to keeping this site up and running with the creations they so work on so many unpaid hours on.

Alright, they'll never see their names lit up in bright red, true.
But at least as 'blue class' (we mustn't be without those old status labels must we?),
they felt they were paying their air-ticket

I agree with you whole heartedly, Nigel, Cees and Steve. I'm a contributor only in the fact that all I do for this community is throw money at Ickie once in a while to help keep the SOH up and running. I want all of us here to have a place to call 'home', to come to for all of our FS needs, and to chat once in a while with friends about FS. That's it. I'm not a developer, nor a painter. I have an extensive library of FS and CFS files and if I have something that someone needs, in so long as it's freeware by the read-me... I will gladly share.

I believe that if there are members here who choose to contribute by sharing their excellent work (Hours of un-paid efforts) as freeware, and upload it to this site for all of us who are otherwise "FS challenged" folks, rather than a financial donation... THAT, in itself is a contribution. Keep in mind that (regardless if you want to believe it or not) FS9 is a disappearing saga... slowly but surely. I sincerely appreciate ANY contributions to the freeware FS9 effort by all who "contribute" with their talents, as well as the payware effort too. Postings to this site by such artists as Nigel, Cees, and SteveB far outweigh the small bit that I contribute each year, and I feel that I'm taking advantage of these folks by using their talents in my virtual models. That's my bit... done, then.

I left one Flightsim board because a clique were dictating who could & couldn't post, and shouting down anybody who tried to object. There are already parts of the SOH I will no longer post in for exactly that same reason; please do not let the FS9 forum go the same way.

Not happy--- i dont consider myself a developer, just someone who makes a bit of scenery for fun for a sim i love and sharing with others to have fun with also, ive been sticking my head round the door way back when this place was called Netwings, and ive enjoyed my visits ever scince and ive happily contributed finacially in the past, but i have to echo the concerns of the above forum members---

Just to be clear on this, can i only upload a file if ive contributed finacially?

cheers ian

Maybe we shouldn't have stickies at all, Since this is only about STICKIE'S and our new New's Link on our front page.
For about 1.5 years Developers of payware found a way of taking over our platform. Our Charter Members started complaining.
They were sick of just anyone demanding their thread be stuck, like the special sales. Our members hated scrolling down 1/2 to 3/4 of a page to see what is being said by normal users.

Many of the Developers got mad at SOH and told us to F-ourselves. I really don't care what you call me, but than they re-signup just to have and demand a stickie, well it's spamming. Some of these users are not even part of these developing teams.
Than there are these people who sign up just to attack a developing team, by other teams. Than blamming SOH because of this.

Example: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?63175-Area-51-Sim-Apache&p=690820#post690820
note this new user: crusader101 he signed up and the day he got to member+ he went on attack of the above Developer team. All of his 3 posts count was all on this page attacking the team.

Most all of fights are started by non Charter Members and suck our Charter Members into their fight.

Our Charter Members have had enough and demanded change. Most agree with this simple change about stickies.

This is why we made the new rule to have only Charter Members who are part of a developing team have Stickies, and have this on our front page for 14 days. We want to know who is the REP's of these teams, and make sure they give support for their payware or freeware products. We do allow support on our forums for freeware.

It is easy to be a Charter Member, donate, and in some cases I made people a Charter Member just by asking.

Oh silly me it's not important then. time I left and got my priorities resorted I suppose.

Steve

It's all about being a moderator. Moderators that stick something without even knowing if it's uploaded here and then again remove it, that's plain crap. Just as these new rules. These rules restrict the free flow of information.

OK, I get the bit about the payware companies etc, but people can choose to scroll past them; and being as very few payware companies publish for FS9 these days (their loss frankly) then what is happening here is something being demanded by the FSX charter members being imposed on all. That doesn't make me feel any more comfortable about this, as I feel there is a very unpleasant clique at work on those threads & I will no longer post there; but it's your call Ickie, so I will respect that.

It is easy to be a Charter Member, donate, and in some cases I made people a Charter Member just by asking.

I did donate (even though, financially, it is very tough for me at the moment) as did most of the other people who have raised concerns here. That was a little low maybe?

I think the only to resolve of this issue, is to have stickies only for Admin Anouncements, not for payware or freeware.

I will kill off the news page as well.

Apologies if I have misunderstood the concept of stickies.

I was under the rather simplistic impression that posts became 'sticky' resulting from subject content of particular interest or significance.

The initiative used to determine which subjects meet these criteria, is surely the discretion of admins in a kind of editor role.

Everything here seemed to be running so smoothly. What's the problem?

I totally agree with the bit that subject matter of any kind, either posted in the Forums, or uploaded to the SOH servers, must meet the approval of the Administrators, this is a given. Nothing wrong there. Perhaps the wording of the announcement was a little mis-leading for a few of us.

I really think that I have very little, if any say at all in the matter at this point. But in comment to your question regarding "What's the problem", Nigel, I will simply say... That's a GOOD question. The answer escapes me...:isadizzy:

Do any of you read the FSX forum? These rules would make complete sense if you had read some of the flame threads that happened there last month. Don't bash without knowing the background!
I think this is a good thing - within reasonable limits.

It seems pretty clear too me that if you are not a paid up charter member then you have no say in anything on this site anymore, regardless of how many years you have spent uploading and posting on these forums, ickies comment on donating makes that quite clear too me, so i will do my bit for the SOH bandwidth by no longer being a parasite that uploads and takes up server space and bandwidth.
I will therefor be uploading my files elsewhere in future and will no longer post any screenies of my work on the SOH.

Steve

Did you read any of our comments, specifically mine?

Picking up on SteveB's comment

"It seems pretty clear too me that if you are not a paid up charter member ......"

Steve, I've been a charter member for a number of years now, but I feel no more valued than you do. Maybe it is time for me to reconsider my participation on this site as well.

Guys, our main concern revolves around some of the ugly posts generated by certain Commercial Developers aimed squarely at other Commercial developers.
Cees, SteveB, AndyG43, Ian Elliot and concerned 'non-charter' members, please remember that we 'Staffers' have certain 'Discretionary Rights' and are not going to penalise ANY of our valued members, what ever their standing.
Bear with us for a few weeks and let us sort the bugs out, the object of the exercise is in the interests of ALL our regulars at SOH.

Just because some fsx posters do not know how too behave, reflects on the fsx forum and the posters there in, and a number of us don't go there for those very reasons.

Steve

I couldn't agree with you more SteveB.
The whole blow-out about SOH over at Flightsim a couple of weeks ago,and now this?!? All this "flight sim politics" is killing FS for me.
WTH(what the hell)?!? The world must be coming to a end:isadizzy:.
