Turkish Phantom downed

What seems odd to me is that (I thought) Turkey and Syria are on friendly terms. Both being Middle Eastern countries and both being Muslim countries. It would be if the US shot down a Canadian fighter aircraft or visa versa while encroaching a bit along the border area. It's not gonna' happen. Apparently,...this shows how much trust,...or mistrust,.....Middle Eastern countries have for one another.

Brad,

There is definitely no friendship between Turkey and Syria. Accusations have been made towards each other for years many already and this has been an other time-bomb in this region for many years already.

As Turkey is a NATO partner this might have consequences for us all. Later this week the NATO will meet to discuss this incident.

A we all know we shouldn't discuss politics here, but it might be used as justification to interfere in the Syrian civil war which is fought at the moment.

Cheers,
Huub

Often the misjudgment of local air defense units plays a role in incidents like this. Knee-jerk response before ID'ing the aircraft, or some officer thinks he'll get a commendation for ordering the plane shot down. I'm thinking that may be what happened here.

TB it is more or less known what happened as both sides tell the same story.

The F-4 participated in an exercise. Both parties confirm that the F-4 had been in Syrian air space, but was back in the international cone when is was shot.

The Syrians claim it was done accidentally, the Turks say it's an action which can not be neglected.

As a member of NATO, Turkey maybe running "taunting" sorties to provoke just this type of Syrian response. NATO can then retaliate by replacing the Syrian government... while maintaining the appearance of being the victim. Nothing new in all this. Politics as usual.

For this to be true, it would require an improbably deep and convoluted conspiracy on the part of various levels of NATO. Unless there is some evidence to the contrary, we can assume this comment to be pure supposition on the authors part.

As I already said we should not talk politics here (and that includes conspiracy theories).
