Saved Flight Screen Image

fsafranek

SOH-CM-2024
FSX has been around so long this has probably been asked and answered before but I couldn't find anything on it.

When you save a flight FSX also makes an image that is displayed as you scroll through your saved flights. For some reason the panel isn't included in the image. I'd like to save the flight and have the panel be displayed in the image as well as what was in front of me. I would appreciate any help in figuring out how to make that happen.

Alternately is there a way do make a normal screen shot with the panel showing and somehow substitute it in for the image created when you save a flight?

Any/all help is greatly appreciated.

AC & Panel thumbnail?

Well, I can do a 'merge' of AC pic and panel pic into a thumbnail. I need a jpg or the aircraft and a jpg of the panel. I can then use IrFanview and Photo Suite programs to do the 'combining'. It's relatively easy to do. Crop and re-size as desired and 'Save As' to texture folder as 'thumbnail'. See pic.

But, I do not know anything about getting the pic that FSX uses for the saved flight(s). That's not to say that I can't learn. Just haven't a clue where it is stored, or in what format.

Thanks for the reply.

For WinXP the saved flight files are here: "C:\Documents and Settings\user name\My Documents\Flight Simulator X Files". For Vista and Win7 then are here: "C:\Users\user name\Flight Simulator X Files".

For each saved flight there is a "*.FLT" file, a "*.FSSAVE" file, and a "*.WX" file. The FLT file is a text file. I'm guessing the WX is a weather file perhaps. That makes the FSSAVE file, which is typically the largest of the three, possibly include the image file.

If I can't figure out how to make the panel be included in the image when I save a flight I'd like to know how to change the image with another that includes the panel.

File Format

Frank,
Well I know where the saved flight files are located (I am using XP) and went and opened *.flt and fssave files with notepad and there is no obvious image file. The *.wx file is the weather file, as you say. Maybe some programer will chime in and elighten us. But that is the 'hard' way to do this. I can combine a prntscrn of aircraft with a prntscrn of the panel (ie: 2 pics, either bmp or jpg) in no time.

I'll PM you my email. If it's default aircraft (FS9 or FSX), and default panel, then I have pics already. If it's not default aircraft/panel, then I will need the pics from you. Any size will do, but ideal size would be 480x256 (aprox). The thumbnail 'final' size will be 280 x XXX (pixels) and is 'jpg'. I have some free time and not working on anything (FDEs) right now, so you can 'use me', if you wish. I can also show you how to do it if you want. I can make a video.

I am aware that you have been around since FS5/FS98 and have done a ton of repaints. But this operation requires a little 'trick' that all your software can't do. But I can do it with PhotoSuite v1.05 from MGI (came with a Logitec WebCam) and is circa 1995 so not (readily) found on web. Some other programs such as Corel Draw, etc, might be able to do the 'job' (combine 2 pics), but I don't know - never tried them.

PS: The attached pic in prior post IS a 'thumbnail', and it is EXACT sample of what you will see in select aircraft page. So it's useful as is. I added text just to show you what can be added to the 'thumbnail' pic. You could add a pic of the pilot too. I can combine several pics into one thumb.

You Had Me At..

Quote: '.. to get the logo (modified panel) to appear) ...'. I never got this 'deep' into the FS works. Sorry I can't help you. Don't even know where to start looking, so I am bowing out. I imagine it can be done (might even be 'easy' after being show how, although not obvious) so I wish you luck with this.
