:icon_eek: Ban me if you must but I am pissed in the "Made In China" clothes we are demanding our Olympians to wear in England.
I wrote an email to my congressman Bill Young, asking him to do something and even gave him a little advice. Send our Olympians there in blue jeans, a white t-shirt and a baseball cap all "Made in the USA", now this is American. I even heard the Flag on display was also Made In China, now this is a total disgrace.
If this disgrace isn't changed, I will boycott the games and its sponsors.

Yes it is a disgrace, but I don't blame China. They are just taking advantage of the situation created by our own government. You might say they are learning capitalism and we are learning socialism.
 
I agree that it is a disgrace, and I certainly wouldn't vote to have you "banned" for speaking your mind, Ickie. But we have only ourselves to blame for letting things get to this point. Not only the "Made in China" issue, but in other circles as well.

After I saw the story I wondered if it was a partial one, like China had won a contract to provide uniforms for all or most of the other countries too, USA being cited sort of out of context. The web was choked with comments about the US reaction so I couldn't find out. To me it would be cool to be able to say all our countrymen and women representing us at the games were decked out in garb all from here, at least for the ceremonies. Is there a separation between suppliers of ceremonial dress versus what is provided for actual competition?
 
Frankly, I don't see the issue here. Political grandstanding is my guess. My "Vietnam Veteran" cap is made in China as are many of our daily-used durable goods. Is it okay if other countries import goods Made In America and use or wear them without outrage?

If you want to be upset, focus should be on politicians and large global investment banks who get away with everything and never seem to be personally held accountable leaving taxpayers to foot the bills.
 
No matter where the uniforms were made, they just look plain silly in my opinion. Voiding the argumant that they saved money by having them made in China is that they are quite pricy too. Acording to the news last night, each uniform must cost in the neigborhood of $1,500 USD.

I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings but IMO they are about the s---tiest looking thing they could have come up with . The Olympic Committee has way too much time on their hands !

I mentioned the same USA Team outfits of jeans and t-shirts to my Wife last night......Then I heard Levis and Wanglers are produced in China, too.....Just how far down have our so called "leaders" let this Country down? Purty dad gum far, I my humble opinion....P/O and fed-up......Gee, maybe we better start listening to D. Trump......:salute:.........sbp
 
Actually Ralph Lauren is the provider of the clothes and I am assuming that his company struck the deal to have the uniforms made in China so if anyone is to "blame" it would be Mr. Lauren's buyers and the Olympic Commitee for awarding the contract to them.
 
If American (or any western) workers were willing to work for 50 cents and hour then maybe they could be made in the USA. But slave labor was outlawed some time back. Milton hit the nail on the head, unfortunately the nail being made in China snapped and broke. :icon_lol:
It is really hard to find stuff that is not made there these days (or India or Taiwan etc) The other day in the supermarket, we needed to get some fresh parsley, of all things you would think it possible that we can still grow parsley, but noooooooo it was blinking Chinese parsley. Makes you wonder how it can possibly be deemed fresh!

There is very little of the once thriving American garment industry left alive. The vast majority of the clothing, sheets, pillow cases, towels, wash cloths we buy and use are made in places like China, Bangladesh, Taiwan, Vietnam, Singapore, India, Pakistan, and the like. I had a "conversation" with one of my co-workers about clothing. She makes a point of buying all those designer name brand clothing in an attempt to impress people. I told her I was not one bit impressed with her American Eagle, Hollister and Tommy Hilfiger clothing just because it cost more than the Hanes, Fruit of the Loom and Wrangler stuff I buy from Walmart. She goes, "But my clothes are made in America," and I said, "No they are not...they are made in the same over-seas sweat shops that make my Walmart bought clothing." She points at the front of her shirt and says "See, AMERICAN Eagle! America!" I walk around her, rip the tag out of the back of her t-shirt and show it to her "See this...made in Bangladesh! Bangladesh is not in AMERICA dumb-@ss!"

NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) and the granting of Favored Trading Partner status to China.....those two acts of Congress/Senate/American Political Idiots.....those killed off and/or are killing off many sectors of business/commerce that made America a productive and wealthy nation. Soon this nation will be a Third-World nation whose citizens work at fast food joints and in the few factory jobs left....but they will not be making much more than minimum wage.

reminds me of a funny story I read about. A while ago Nike had a promo that offered customers to have a word or phrase stitched into their shoes for a fee. Obscene and vulgur words were not allowed. Some guy wanted them to stitch 'SWEAT SHOP' on the shoes, they declined...citing the words fell under their 'obscene' words list. There was an amusing exchange of letters on how 'Sweat Shop' could be defined as obscene.

I don't blame the immigrants, I blame the greedy SOBs that hire them. I don't blame other countries for our econmic problems. I blame the greedy SOBs who chose to relocate there for higher profits. Gotta love greed eh? We went from 'love is all you need' in the 60s to 'who ever dies with the most toys wins'...maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle.
 
LMAO, Who do you think owns the USA. Americans...lol.China owns most of our banks, cars parts,clothes,appliances parts, ect..ect. I don't care what you buy in the USA, some part of it is made in China. We are also in hock up to our ears to China and it will never get paid off. If you buy something that says it was made in the USA, think again. It may have been built in the USA but I bet cha the parts came from a third world or China. Even the clothes that we sell comes from China. See what you can find on the market today that has 100% USA parts. Good luck.

Good evening,

Politicians in Washington are harping on this because it makes a good stump speech and a distraction. Yes, I agree the uniforms should have been made here, and yes, I also think they look ridiculously silly. But the more time Congress can ride this wave, the more they can defer dealing with real stuff, such as tax cuts.

This is why, as a teacher, we're pushing our students hard on math and science. However, the minute I bring up extending the school year's days to keep up with other countries, I have most of my colleagues and parents coming down on me like white on rice.
 
A friend of mine recently mentioned to me that only 3% or 4% of clothing garments are still made in the US. Pretty small and sad number.
 
Previous post made the point that the "made in" tags really don't mean much. That's pretty much true.....

We are not really interested in where things are made anymore, but who's making the bucks. Fact is, the U.S. benefits from trade with China. American workers benefit from trade with China. There are things that can only be made in the U.S., and we still make them. There are technologies that can only be executed in the U.S. and some other Western Nations, and we still do that.

Clothes can be made anywhere -- cheap.

Now, I do agree that these are the UGLIEST uniforms we've put forward of late....clearly designed by a metro-sexual. Jeans are the universal uniform and the U.S.'s number one contribution to fashion....go with it.
 
Does Finger-wagging Congress Wear Made In America?

Of course not; 98% of all apparel and 99% of footwear in America is imported. Where do they shop.

It makes sense for the majority of us who cannot afford or do not wish to pay $100 for a shirt or $150 for shoes.

These items are labor intensive to manufacture, and in our economy, it makes sense that they are imported.

I would not knock China's economy much; their growth is at 7.8% right now compared to our paltry <2%.

Canada, Mexico, and China are our 3 biggest customers for exports. Our businesses appreciate that.
 
I agree with Milton. And besides, this country is one of the most expensive and regulatory-crazy places to run a business in the entire world. We wonder why businesses are looking elsewhere...
