The XC-120 looked like it would have been a viable alternative to the C-119.
Still think that's a valid concept.
In terms of fire fighting equipment, for example.
Put in a pod that can drop Smokejumpers on site, plane returns, switches out and picks up a tanker pod to drop retardant.
Plane returns to switch out Tanker pods to help with quicker, continued support.
By switching out pods like that, no need for the aircraft to be tied up waiting for the drop tanks to be refilled on the ground.
Plane like that could drop a Command Center pod at a remote airstrip, drop off cargo, etc.

Dyna-Soar may have never "made it" in its original form, but I would like to think it "made it" with the X-37B program going on now, and possibly XCOR's 'Lynx" orbiter if that ever makes into testing.
