Truk Lagoon

Hi wolfi.

This has been the main terrain problem of CFS2... the land-masking is misplaced or mis-shaped. The mesh is not bad, and if we want a "standard", then SRTM mesh is probably the best solution. What you then find is some islands are miles from their correct position. CFS2 used the old CIA-based World Data Base. SRTM is satellite radar reflectance. They don't match, and the SRTM is a lot closer to reality than the CIA WDB.

The SWBD are based on satellite imagery, and in many cases, the old World Data Base... as the images ( especially islands ) are cloud-covered in the LandSat7 pictures. There's a bit of hand masking as well, I believe.

As Chris points out, the modern shorelines can deviate a bit from WW2, and those areas require research and tweaking.

Both the terrain mesh and the LWM masking can be done relatively easily.

You can use SBuilder or Slartibartfast to produce FS9 LWMs which can then be converted with LWMViewer's decompilation ability, and Edgar Knobloch's CFS2 water conversion program. Sander De Cocq used FS9 water masks, that are then run through LWMViewer to obtain images.... But the FS9 data is still not right! SWBD is better.

Shorelines ( beaches ) are trickier, as they require Ground2K. Many times I just ignore the beaches. Most areas of the world don't have the nice wide sandy beaches we see in the sim. When you're thinking of replacing entire LOD5 sized areas, the beaches are a bit insignificant... better to model accurate beaches near airfields and targets, rather than the whole world. Landsat imagery can help locate these significant beaches, and they can be modeled in Ground2K, using LandSAT images as a background.

As far as flattening the occasional water hill... if it really bugs me, I make an a16 flatten. But SRTM mesh, and SWBD masking fits 98% OK, as Chris indicates.

It becomes a matter of scale. We can't get the whole world to near photographic realism, but small areas we can, as Jean has demonstrated.

Jean has pointed out the new problem we have with better data. If we adopt SRTM and LandSAT7 as the terrain standard, then we will need to scrap most of the airfields and missions already made, as they no longer fit our new ( and more accurate ) world.

The MSFS world has already gone this route, constantly seeking better realism. I still remember the first time I took GIS data and converted it to water and roads in FS2002. That was my "WOW!" moment... no one had done it before. For the first time in a flight simulator, I KNEW where I was. :isadizzy: That's the reason I prefer rebuilding the world as best we can, and making new airfields and missions to match. Let the past go, and accept the WOW.

Besides, that gives Chris a reason to rebuild all of his beautiful bases to match the new terrain.

Absolutely Correct.....

Most of the AC destroy in Turk by our Navy Aviators where like in Pearl Harbor destroy on the ground. Their main Navy force"s had already abandoned the Turk Harbor just before we attack it. We did destroy some destroyers but most of the Ships that where sunk where Merchant Ships. It was more of a statement operation than a true Pear Harbor in reverse if you really look at it with a objective Historical point of view.

....Hailstone was like shooting fish in a barrel for the attacking US Naval aircraft....total losses 27 to AAA/mech failure. Of the near 300 Japanese aircraft on the three airfields, 90% were in crates or in the process of being assembled. Except for AAA they were just plain sitting ducks. The official record shows 277 Japanese aircraft destroyed....but it wasn't in the air. There are 58 Japanese ships (99% small marus) on the bottom of the two primary anchorages (4th Fleet and Merchant), and a number of other warships sunk outside the atoll.

Hell, the SBD crews were flying around after delivering their loads snapping photos with Kodak Brownies.

This is the reason that this 'battle' was ingnored by CFS2 campaign writers.

It's one of the reason why I 've restarted to built sceneries in this old game ,I've compared the Gibraltar rock in cfs2 and fs9 ,in this there are trees house etc...but I don't recognize the rock ,it was here ,with the mesh but ,it had not the right contours and cliff due to the flattens ,near but not ... ,I've had a "BEUUU" moment ,studing how to upgrad it in fs9 the problem seem to be the flattens that we can't remove in this game ,you can remesh through G2k ,point by point but could be to huge and too complex work :isadizzy:....and intellectually work on a wrong map I know that at the end I can't get a complete satifaction and even get frustation ,and all this work consume time..
The interest of cfs2 ,and it's also that the new users doesn't like,it's that almost all is "to build" in this game ,we are in many place in a kind of virgin country no shore ,geometric coast ,illogic landclass placement, no flattens etc ......and whith some works in G2K and added mesh we can easly have some "WOW" moment that I hope to share with the cfs2 simmers as soon I can present a completly done scenery, with all the enhancements possible in it.

I just want to thank you and I hope you will continue your wonderful work in the future!:wavey:

I do appreciate it very much!:jump:

Happy new year and the best to all ! :friday:

The scenery is done ,uploaded tonight in the cfs2 scenery section ,Only a ground and water rebuilt.
I hope the read will be clear about the install. In fact two sceneries was needed to make the lagon and the islands ,principaly a waterclass work, one for each scenery.
here some pics
Thanks for your supports ,I wait for your feedbacks ..............if I've missed something.........

Thanks, I'll have to check this out. :applause: Last summer I started a 3 part mission - fighter sweep, dive bomber attack (using Wolfi's SB2C) and a torpedo attack - using the stock scenery. I got lazy and gave up... maybe this will reinspire me. :jump:

A bit of trivia.

Pappy Boyington was transiting through Truck as a POW during a major US Navy strike, possibly Hailstone.

.........travail véritablement merveilleux et superbe JP

....:ernae:the reef work is outstoundingly beautiful:ernae:
...............thanks matey:engel016:

Sounds like a plan Ghostrider. When can we expect you to be finished with it.:jump:

It is underway - completion TBD - This scenery is gorgeous - Great job again, JB! May I have your permission to do this with your scenery?

I'll need some testers - setting up as a 7 mission mini campaign. TG 58.1 ops against the Dublon anchorage on 16 Feb 44. Will include the dawn fighter sweep, and air to ground and anti shipping strikes by VB and VT throughout the day from Enterprise, Yorktown, and Belleau Wood.

My biggest worry right now is what add-ons I'm using vs. what people have, and permissions, etc. I'm laboring under the assumption that anyone else still flying CFS2 is as hardcore as I am, and has pretty much every addon out there. :mixedsmi:

I'd like to use the FDG Dauntless, or maybe The AF=Midway one. All thoughts, ideas, and suggestions are welcome...

Back to work!

You'll need a Helldiver also.I know Enterprise still had the Dauntless until after the Marianas but other carriers started using the Helldiver in Febuary 1943.
