Insane time -- Again -- Over at PCAviator

oh, I added accu feel, but I can still run the engine full throttle for hours without a problem.
No, it is the engine management with all its little quirks that I am missing. With accusim, I sort of feel responsible for my engine, it takes me back to my old motorcycles. I've had a Triumph, a Harley and a BSA, which were (usually) wonderful when treated right, but you constantly had to watch them, like for instance the A2A Spitfire that really wants to overheat.
Later, I bought an old BMW that was a bit easier, like the Mustang, but you still had to pay attention to all the little sounds it made.
My latest, new, BMW was a bit like the WBS Mustang, beautiful, but impossible to break, engine-wise...
Unfortunately, I am currently 'between bikes', though I still have a restoration project in the garage...

Well, Christmas certainly did come early this year. :santahat:

I've been waiting to buy the FSX P-51B/C/III for ages and the 60% off (with Tuesday discount) swung it for me. Also bought the P-51K and Bf109K package as well, couldn't resist!

Really like the new animated pilot on the P-51K - much more realistic/immersive in external view.

Can't help thinking that the pilot in the Bf109K looks like Daniel Craig (James Bond 007) - I know the new movie is called "Skyfall" but surely Q hasn't issued him with a Bf109K? But then again, wasn't there a rare Bf109PPK model powered by an Aston Martin DB605 engine? :icon_lol:

Congrats to Warbirdsim and Flight Replicas for such superb products. :salute:

Comparing the A2A 'Stang, and Warbirdsim, is like comparing a big-mac, to the fourth-of July backyard BBQ with ranch-raised Beef.... sure they both taste good, but one holds all the goodies, and that's Warbirdsim.

Joseph

7 awards for A2A mustang and it's a big mac? yeah right.

I bought this on sale, and was dissapointed with the engine sound it's not right, at low power settings it sounds like a leaf blower. Get the A2A if you want it done right.

Well maybe not to everyones taste, but Hangar 11 sure does have a powerful leaf blower up front when I recorded those sounds in Jumpin' Jacques in 2006 and 2008.

I'm not sure why that is, as the Little Friends package onwards has the engine stress damages engine enabled.
Needs to ticked in the realism settings of course.

Just wanted to point out that over the years of hearing mustangs at air shows no 2 ever sound the same to me. They all have subtle differences. Just my opinion.

I have no problem with the sound, but then again I don't have my speakers or headphones on a loud setting as from experience gained in P-51s and other warbirds, you're equipped with either a hard helmet or good headphones that try to lesser the ever so loud sounds coming from that engine up front.

On my first ever T-6 flight, now 25 years ago, I thought you would hear that wonderful rasp it makes from within, but no, just a very loud din!! And on my first P-51 ride in 1992, I was asked by my friend to take my bonedome off for a few seconds....the noise was tremendous and it made me wonder how those young men went all the way to Berlin and back with just a cloth headset on. At times now, my ears pop every now and again and the sound amplifies, but I suppose they knew no different.

One recent T-6 had Bose noise reduction headphones fitted, but I was always told off for having mine switched off!!! :)

Best wishes,

Martin

I too think P-51s have different sounds, but then again that might be down to guns fitted or not, as I believe that whine they make when they pass is the air rushing over the barrels. In all, a wonderful, wonderful aeroplane and I'm so grateful that I have been in a position to have sampled a couple along with other superb aeroplanes. At times, I don't realise how lucky I have been.

Sorry, do not mean to interject, but want to speak a bit about the "howl" or "whistle" that people hear on the P-51. This is a topic that has been hotly debated in the past, and even a bit of testing theory has been applied. I come from the belief that there are multiple things which cause this howl, and I also believe that there is more than one particular sound. It is however not specifically the gun ports which has been erroneously reported, and it seems every Mustang is different. Miss America, which has no gun ports still exhibits this sound although her gun ports have indeed been removed.

I'm with Dudley Henriques on this in that it comes from multiple sources. Until someone can scientifically conduct tests under the same atmospheric conditions then conduct said tests by singling out individual potential sources, nobody will truly know. In the Mustang community this topic is still talked about heavily among the guys who REALLY fly them and still no proof has been given that hasn't been refuted at this time.

As to the discussion about recording the sound from a P-51, the Merlin tends to drown even the best audio equipment setups. This is just one reason why audio recordings can sound so drastically different. It takes a very high understanding of sound engineering to truly capture a Merlin "as we hear it."

I won't comment any further since I have a dog in the fight. Cheers and enjoy whichever P-51 you decide to get.

Whistle Or Whine or Scream?

There always has been a debate about what exactly causes the wine or whistle (some even say scream) on the P-51.

It would seem however, that P-51s flying with gunports fitted and open make a much more distinctive and louder whistle seemingly based on changes in angle of attack, than those that don't have gun ports fitted.

As an example, here's the former Scandanavian Historic Flights P-51 'Old Crow' (N167F) which doesn't (or didn't at the time) have gun ports fitted. I hear a faint whistle at 0:46, but it not as prominant as on those aircraft fitted with gun ports.

Here's another video of 'Old Crow' doing a practice display, yet I hear no sign of a whistle in this video!

Cheers

Paul

And here for comparison, a few UK based P-51s with gun ports fitted, making that highly distinctive and very prominant whistle.

And OFMC's 'Ferocious Frankie', perhaps the Mustang that whistles, screams, whines, the most! :d

I seem to recall overhearing FF's pilot Alister Kay (at this very display btw) talking to some other spectators about how you have to be careful when holding (prior to running in for your display) when making changes in the angle of attack, as the crowd will hear the whistle, thus, in this case, spoiling the surprise!

Cheers

Paul

Is this an acceleration feature, because I don't have acc, and can't find anywhere to tick this feature?

Yes Jankees it is. Its a generic bit of code built into FSX that basicly says if in the red for x time then engine fire.

WBS P-51K Flight Replicas Bf-109K

Just picked it up on Saturday. Love the -K models. Fantastic job WBS crew! Mike, your 109K is outstanding! I just love the Dallas canopy....I've said it before, but it looks more streamlined, than the California canopy. Very impressed. I love the authenticity. There's one thing that has been growing on me, and it's to have authentic aircraft in my hangar. Not just repaints, of authentic aircraft, but the model as well. that's one thing that lacks when generically combining a "P-51D" with a known P-51D model variant to which the repaint looks good, but is flying on a variant which never had the paint scheme. So in these cases, I love that the models have been reproduced! I'm sure it's the same way with German aircraft of the era, I'm just not as familiar with it. Great job guys!

Hey guys, just finding this thread now. Thank you for the feedback as well as the constructive criticisms - all of it helps and I appreciate it!

It's good to hear the interest in the P-51K/Bf-109K product - it was a very fun project to work on, especially with the variants being as early as they are (internally the epitome of the common look/configuration of WWII-era P-51D/K's). I'm with you Rick, in finding the Dallas canopy to be a favorite on the P-51D/K, and not something you see depicted in too many simulations (none that come to mind at least). In all, there were 5-different canopy shapes seen on P-51D/K's in service during WWII alone, three of which came from the Inglewood, CA production.

Here are some of my favorite screenshots from that project:

If you were to have poked your head into any European-based P-51D/K in mid-late 1944 and 1945, this is the sight that would have greeted you in the majority of all of those aircraft (save for the minor field mod here and there (a few field mods of which are seen in these depictions - such as the deletion of the signal light and Detrola or Setchell Carlson beacon receiver, the installation of the K-14A gun sight (including early throttle and controls mounting), and the installation of the APS-13 tail warning radar set). Although I have never depicted it, sometimes, in-service, pilots would re-mount the clock in the location of the extra gauge/gauge cover plate, in the lower right section of the instrument panel, so that they wouldn't have to be always looking around the gunsight in order to see it. Out on the wings you can see the dull silver dope painted finish.
