'So I'm Watching "Mary Poppins" With The Kids

The wife and I were asking the same thing earlier this year when we bought the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.

Now that is a classic great movie that does not age. :applause:

Since about half the movies they make these days are remakes (just saw a promo for the "NEW" Red Dawn) maybe they will make it again. Won't be a good as the original but it will have better special effects and more product placement.

Seriously though, what great wholesome viewing. Nothing comparable these days. We missed out on this in the 70's as we were always at work, now catching up big time on some great shows.

Last week finished with Tenko and have Secret Army awaiting attention.

We sgould be petitioning our TV stations to dump these reality shows and make great drama again.
 
I HATE TV anymore, the only things I watch nowadays are the Discovery Channels,Smithsonian etc.... Network television has no redeeming factors going for it at all,very disappointing......Even cable isn't very good anymore,Showtime and Encore play the same stuff over and over again...:icon_eek:
 
Disney Movies

I grew up in the 50s and the 60s, so Disney Movies were always anticipated and attended. The Sunday evening Disney TV show as well as the Mickey Mouse Club were all on our black and white TV complete with rabbit ear antenna until I thought I was too old to watch 'em anymore. Thank goodness I got to see 'em again after the wife and I started our family.

I grew up in the 70s but I sure as heck remember waiting for Sunday evening's Wonderful World Of Disney along with the periodic theatrical releases and showing of the 30s-60s classic on the tele! :jump::jump::jump:
 
I just love the Disney movie Herbie and the Disney take on Robin Hood with the animal characters.
 
sunday nights at my house,we had to have dinner at 5pm,my sister and i were showered and readied for bed before 7pm,thats when disney's wonderfull world of disney came on,and we allways had a small bowl of popcorn each and a glass of soda...we werent allowed much soda..so it was a real treat..i especailly liked the specail two hour movie nights,because i was allowed to stay up...bedtime for davey ws 8pm in those days...lol..

now-a-days i prefer "film noir"..i have a dvd set of 100 of the best of noir..movies from the heyday of the 40s and early 50s..good stuff..and then im a nut for anything from the early 30s.."pre-code"..TCM is starting to not only sell some on dvd,but also are showing some..been some great old Constance Bennentt movies from the pre-code days and just after this month.

and cant beat the thinman movies...have them all on dvd aswell....i watch them all in a row once a year..

and some great TV from 2000/2001...the A&E series of Nero Wolfe,staring Timmothy hutton and Maury Chakin....based on Rex Stouts stories....as good as the David Suchet Poirot shows,...good stuff..

Ahhh yes, Sunday night Disney and a treated to a bowl of ice cream or chocolate pudding. Those were the days.

Come to think of it, on Thanksgiving day evening they used to always show Chitty chitty bang bang. I think "Home alone" replaced it. Always love that show but of course disliked that feller with the big nose who sniffed out kids.

We watched "My Fair Lady" on TCM last night, which is one of my 16 year old's favorite movies....along with "Mary Poppins".

So, now I'm out looking for the Blue Ray's of both. She is very partial to musicals.

Our choice (and debate) of theater this year is to either see "The Nutcracker" or "Mary Poppins" on stage at the Straz here in Tampa. I love going to the theater. It's a dress up event for me (well, suit anyway, maybe not tux) with drinks at intermission....the whole thing.

I think "Mary Poppins is going to win out....we've seen "The Nutcracker" on stage several times.

I'm like Panther though, I'm partial to certain Disney and R&H (Messrs Rogers and Hammerstein) from a certain period.

I totally agree that there is little entertainment in the world of entertainment these days. Television is nothing but junk. Movies....the best movies to hit the screen the last several years have been animated features....there have been a few regular movies that Deb and I have liked, but not many. Remake after remake is what Hollyweird is doing......read that they have a remake of Dirty Dancing in the works...how the heck can it be Dirty Dancing without Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray? Horror movies aren't scary anymore....they are just excessively gory.

We ditched cable some years back and have NO regrets about doing so. Netflix and an every growing collection of DVD and Blue Ray movies is how Deb and I fulfill our movie watching needs. Just have to love those $5 movie tubs at Walmart!
