Suggestions on how to proceed? I chose not to continue with the update. I know from past experience that can be disasterous....

I have these dramas all the damn time, I find that I look for the previous version or back up in the folder and use that, then reinstall the software required
once I have everything running again, I copy the current version and rename it so i have a back up for the next lot errors, I do that for all the key files in that horrible folder
I'd make a copy of the dll.xml and proceed.
The xml code of the file is easy to read or understand, so if the update messes up or forgets some of the entries they are easily replaced or re-added by the ones you've saved in the backup.
