On January 31, 1943 in the HQ-Bunker located in the basement of this GUM department store, von Paulus and his staff were taken prisoner and surrendered to members of the 38th rifle brigade of the Soviet 62nd Army. Two days later on February 2 the 6th Army formally capitulated.
Three additional pictures of interest:
1. The department store as it appeared during the battle,
2. As it appeared later- I am guessing late 40s or even later during the war.
And one more from Google Earth showing how the facade of the wartime original department store- which is still a department store- is obscured by the Intourist Hotel.
