Camera Zoom Views

WarHorse47

SOH-CM-2024
Are there some guidelines or a tutorial on how to globally set the zoom factor on the various views?

After I load my a/c, each view (VC, spot, etc.) is too close and I have to zoom out. I did this with my default flight so it takes care of the VC, but if I cycle my views with the 'A' key each view is too close and I have to change the zoom factor.

There is a camera.cfg file in the FSX root folder. I assume there might be some global settings that can be changed, but before I screw things up I thought I'd ask for some direction.

Thanks in advance.

Open the aircraft.cfg file for the specific aircraft. Each view is defined in the aircraft.cfg file under each [cameradefiniton.xxx] entry. Find the initialzoom=xxx and adjust accordingly.

Yes, I'm aware of that. Thanks, Dave.

Problem is that could be a lot of editing for each aircraft, and for each camera view. My question was more from a global perspective as the stock zoom factor appears to be the same for all aircraft - too close.

Unfortunately, I think either way you'd have to modify each aircraft.cfg as it drives the specifics for that aircraft. One of those things that's a bit of a pain. If I'm wrong I apologize in advance.

Global?

Heck, there NEVER was any 'Global' settings for models in any of the past sims, and never will be now for there ain't going to be any future sims. That's just the way it is. Each modeler sets his/her own rules for settings. One of my pet peeves. They (modelers) do not 'mingle' or 'share' anything. So we have to make adjustments on our own.

There is no 'call' for ZOOM in ANY of the views (camer_views excepted). Zoom leads to distortion and messes up your ability to judge distance (which can lead to real sloppy flying-especially with helicopters). Zet zoom to 1x (press 'Backspace' key). Done.

For LOCKED Spot View, hit backspace and then use: 'Ctrl' (hold down) then '-' or '+' keys to move closer or further from aircraft (WITHOUT any zoom).

For 2D panel view(s) you have to set things up in the panel.cfg. The one thing you might have to do is use 'Ctrl+Q' (to lower eye point or lower the dash so you can see the runway) or 'Ctrl+Shift+Q' to raise the eye point (and dash) to where horizon is in middle of view.

For 3D (VC) panel view, you need to set positon of eyepoint in (Views) section of aircraft.cfg. The values (positions-lon/lateral/vert) will be different for each ac (ie: each model, as all models are different). That's it. Read em and weep.

And do get 'FSX Key Commands' list (key that in search here at FSCom) for best use of FSX and to learn the adjustment routines (and what keys do what). We all had to learn those key combos. Well, 'we all' that need/want things to 'work right'. Cheers.

..and the winner with the right answer is....

Serge. Merci beaucoup. :applause::applause::applause:

Setting the WideViewAspect=True fixed all my issues.

Although your problem is solved, I might point out that if you edit the camera.cfg file
found in Appdata\roaming\Microsoft\FSX the effect will be "global".
