Operaton Pedestal released!

Good evening,

Operation Pedestal has just been released. This campaign has been completely overhauled to include near-historically accurate convoy sizes, (forty-plus ships until Force Z departs!) as well as extensive historical research regarding aircraft types and formation sizes.

Several missions have upwards of forty or fifty aircraft...one mission in fact tops out at one hundred and eleven!

These eighteen missions are based on history, but occasionally I tweaked the numbers of Allied planes on intercept to give you more of a fighting chance in certain situations. There are also two brand-new missions which I created based on historical data. At the ends of the campaign, I also threw in a purely fictional mission just for kicks.

The only major scenery you will need for this campaign is Malta. The Axis side, when completed (later on, I need a break from convoy missions!) will require additional scenery.

As far as aircraft are concerned, you'll fly the Hawker Sea Hurricane, Grumman Martlet, Fairey Fulmar, Fairey Albacore, Bruno's Spitfires, and the Bristol Beaufighter.

Next up is to work on Athens...with the upcoming school vacation week, I can get around to releasing the RAF Vs the Regia Aeronautica, (Phase I of the Balkan project) the updated "Hellas" campaign, as well the updated "Heinkels" and "Fleet Air Arm" campaigns. (Don't get too excited...I switched a few missions to set with Achim's newest airfields, and I added a GSL harbor at Andalsnes, Norway.)

I plan on diving back into Phase II of the Balkan project (RAF Vs the Luftwaffe) when I clear this housekeeping work.

A new entry has been added to Add-Ons Library, category CFS 2 Campaigns Add-Ons

Description: This is my extensive overhaul of the “Operation Pedestal” campaign found at the closed IS4G website. I want to thank them for creating this wonderful and vibrant campaign. This Mediterranean campaign has been updated in the usual fashion, including the utilization of the Malta scenery by Brunosk. Additionally, many of the flyable aircraft have been updated as well.

Because of the amount of ships and aircraft involved, you will need a fairly fast PC to run these missions effectively. If you do not have a reasonably fast computer, you may notice reduced frame rates over land, and over the convoy. In most cases though, once you’re over the water, frame rates should be more than acceptable.

This was one of the projects I have wanted to work on again and update for a long time, and I am quite pleased with the overall results. For those who want the original mission files, I included those as well.

The reason for that is that my goal here was playability, occasionally at the expense of historical accuracy. However, the missions are certainly within the sphere of realism and probability, I assure you. Also, if you read the mission info, some of these raids were massive. Accordingly, these missions have been expanded to include the actual amounts of aircraft involved, because most users of CFS2 have updated their computers, and thereby framerates are not nearly the concern they were in years past.

Good morning,

Allow me to thank two people in this thread...

1) Thanks to UncleTgt, for creating a skin for the Donationware F4F Wildcat specifically for this campaign project.

2) Talon, for his Mediterranean skin for the HMS Eagle, as well as his "pushing" me to work on more convoy missions. I hope this will get him off my back, albeit temporarily...lol

OK, I'm an idiot

All my problems are in the ID 10 T category (just write it down, and you'll know what I mean) but it would be very nice, if one of you geniuses made a download that changed a standard CFS2 install into, say a MED install into which one could put all those wonderful campaigns. I have twice made a MED install according to Rami's wonderful instructions, still I always end up with big squares of "nothing" in the midst of an otherwise nice install. If this add-on could include Malta, which never seem to work anyway, it would only be better.

Hoping for a simple yet perfect solution,

Finn :applause:

Well Rami, who else would give you "a good swift kick"? That's my job. :icon_lol: I did the HMS Eagle a long time ago.

Look in the "Utilities" category of the addons library and get Rami's MTO install tutorial: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/images/ldm-silk-icons/download.png I recently used it and it sets up and works fine... The "big squares of nothing" may be because you didn't copy and paste all the textures from your Scenedb/world/textures folder to your main Texture's folder. You're not an idiot... you just didn't know. Note: Rami forgot to emphasize that anytime you add objects/files to your Scenedb scenery folders, be sure to delete the filelist.dat files, so the change will take.

Thank u Rami!

Rami,

You have done a professional and high quality job like always! Please keep working because this campaigns made by you will be the reference to the end of this game. There are more aspects and sides to recreate in the classical campaigns that has not been covered yet. (I would like to play this campaign from Italian side. :icon_lol: ):medals: :icon29:

Misson,

First, allow me to say that this is in no way a jab at those who are the "silent majority," who download my projects without saying anything, but I genuinely appreciate people who take the time to say thank you. I do this not only because it stimulates development, but it also provides me with an outlet for recreating history.

You may or may not know this, but I use Mission Builder and some of my campaigns in the classroom, to help demonstrate, in my World War II class, some of the lesser-known episodes in the Second World War. (Hence the Balkans project)

There are always those who take the time to say thank you when someone releases a new product, and they know who they are. Comments like yours help keep me motivated and feel appreciated.

As far as professionalism, this is where bring a perfectionist has real benefits. I like putting together a product where you can access most everything quickly and easily. I also feel an obligation to use as many of the objects, aircraft, and vehicles that others create, and select from the best available.

And as far as the Italian campaign is concerned, it will be both Italian and German, but flown under an Italian flag. Creating convoy attack missions are always inherently more difficult and time consuming, especially the way I do them. As Talon and Shadow Wolf can attest to, I have a psychological bent for doing things the hard way. It will be easier to do now that I have the Pedestal missions, with completed convoys, as a "base" to start with. All of the ship waypoints will be there, along with their names, so I just have to "flip" the missions, re-time them, and create the dynamic elements.

Hail the master

Thank you Rami - once again you have destroyed several nights sleep. I'll try to make a new MED install according to your great tutorials, and run the gauntlet all the way to Malta. (Hopefully) THANK YOU:applause:

Finn

Rami, as always you amaze me with how you can accomplish so much. I never could get the IS4G Pedestal campaign to work. I'm looking forward to flying this one once I can cobble some time together. Thanks for all you do. :medals:

Good evening,

One thing I forgot...when flying the Fulmar off the deck, make sure to have your elevator up! I kept the convoy at 13 knots to make sure it stays together, so the Fulmar wants to belly-flop into the sea.

It is at flying speed by the time it leaves the deck, so with a little up elevator you'll do just fine.

Hi Rami!
Thank you for this campaign! I´ll fly it as soon as I can find the time!

A question on the side: Does the MTO Master Airbase List already contain Achim´s new and reworked airfields in the Balkans and Middle East?

Cheers,
Wolfgang

Hi Rami,

Thanks for this campaign. I had just finished the MTO installation and this was the missing clue.

BTW, I want to ask you if the next step its the Mezzagosto campaign.
cheers:wiggle:

Nik112,

Probably not. RAF Vs Regia Aeronautica will be released this week. I almost had this done yesterday, but I broke a cardinal rule of mission building when working on the layout for Piraeus harbor, and forgot to save what I was doing. I had the ships all placed at the docks, and was putting in the AA guns, when I zoomed in to place something and the game went into a CTD fit on me.

In short, I lost about seventy-five minutes' worth of work. I'm still miffed about that, but I'll do it again this week. Once I modify the GSL layout for Athens, I'll be able to modify my MTO GSL harbor package, the Hellas campaign, Fleet Air Arm, and release the RAF vs Regia Aeronautica campaign, which has been fully beta-tested by kdriver, Discus, and misson.

I'll also update by Europe GSL package and the "Heinkels" campaign to reflect the GSL harbor at Andalsnes, Norway.

Because I slaved so long on the details of Pedestal, I'm not exactly frothing at the mouth to go through it again at the moment. To illustrate why these types of missions take me so long, here is an example, for a different campaign I've had under tight security. Take a look at the dynamic elements and the structure of it in Mission Builder.

I was working on this campaign project (there are two other sides to it) last summer, but 486_Col_Wolf asked me to complete the German side to the Battle of Britain, so I worked on that instead and left the desert behind. I hath returned, and will try to complete it this summer, along with the Balkans and Mezzagosto.

Hey! could someone please post a copy of that "MTO master airbases.dat?" :salute:

Thanks again Rami-san, I've downloaded all the parts except one and expect to be on deck soon. :)

Shadow Wolf,

I'm almost 100% sure it's in the Pedestal package.
