How can I increase the speed of an aircraft?

Hi there,


Does anyone know how we could increase the speed of an aircraft in CFS2 and with what tools?

I looked at AirEd but found no speed parameters.

Sure, but in what context? Are you talking about in Mission Builder, or actual flight characteristics?

If it's the latter, the quick and dirty way is to increase the thrust and engine scalars in the .cfg file above 1.0.

Otherwise, it can be done by modifying data entries such as empty weight, manifold pressure, horsepower, compression ratio, cylinder displacement, and number of cylinders in the engine.

Thanks. I want to increase the speed in the indiv. a/c folder, not thru the MB. I know how to do the MB thing.

You say the scalar values. Is that only one entry, like tou said for the Allen Baltimore, or more than one. What you said for the Allen Baltimore I have saved in a text file that I use to look at, as I did that change for that a/c.

If one raises the scalar value to more than 1, what can happen. In that post you had written:

1) In the aircraft.cfg under "thrust_scalar," change it from 0.67 to 1.0


What if we change to 2.0, for example, instead of 1.0?

Jinx,

The props will generate two times as much thrust, making for a better climb rate, increased takeoff performance, and a higher top speed. The downside? Your range will be chopped by half.

Many thanks for the explanations. I can do some tests then and see what happens with range, etc...

BTW, is there a text file anywhere or anything that explains all these parameters?

there is no text that I know of.

its funny that alot of people think that this is a game. we must remember it is a simulator. the kool thing about this is real world information translates well. In other words, what works on a real aircraft can be applied to these aircraft.

i suggest getting a copy of Air wrench. now you can not make adjustments in it (unless you get the full version) but it will help show you the effects of your changes.

just a thought:
i think that thrust is equal to torque but please don't quote me on that. In automobiles if you increase the torque then you increase its ability to go faster. torque gets you going and Horse power keeps you going. is an old drag racers term. i believe that thrust can be applied in the same way.

sorry for the rambling.

if you research aerodynamic terms you can get alot of information to help you. then you just have to learn where to plug it all in.

the prop pitch has a huge effect on you top speed. a variable pitch prop will give you the ability to adjust the pitch to gain the best angle for climbing and at cruise. remember that the propeller is a wing. if the pitch is to great it will stall and no longer creat lift. or in this case thrust.

see if the aircraft has a variable pitch prop. if it does then find the propeller controls and use them while flying.
