Was May 27 1927...the "Spirit of St Louis" and aimed her down the dirt runway of Roosevelt Field, Long Island..And history tells us all!

" The coastline came down from the north and curved towards the east. I had very little doubt that it was the southwestern end of Ireland, but in order to make sure I changed my course towards the nearest point of land.

I located Cape Valencia and Dingle Bay, then resumed my compass course towards Paris."

The World Became much smaller that day!..Vin!!

As a young lad, I just could never figure out how he flew that aeroplane with the gas tank where the windshield should have been. Still can't quite imagine it.

As you all probably know, Lucky Lindy had rock star fame after that, and suffered the kidnapping and killing of his son possibly as a result. He fell into disfavor with the US Government due to his active membership in, what was it, the America First organization? He was stripped or resigned his commission in the army reserve over it all and was denied service with the military in WWII. As an employee of Lockheed, he went on to pioneer fuel saving techniques for the P-38s in the SW Pacific and if stories are to be believed, shot down a couple of Japanese aeroplanes.
 
The biography I have of him states he was also into the study of eugenics.

I know he was vocally involved with the America First Committee prior to WWII. FDR sicced the IRS on him several times, but he came out clean as a whistle after every audit. After the first one, he was said to pay all his taxes plus 10% just to be sure he overpaid. FDR couldn't lay a hand on him. The book says there was some difficulty with his USAR commission, but exactly as you said he worked jointly with Lockheed and the AAF in the South Pacific, getting more mileage out of a P-38 than anyone thought possible. I think he was given an honorary rank during his trip to the SP, in case he fell into Japanese hands, but then this was a common precaution taken for USO entertainers as well.

He's buried on the Hawaiian island of Maui. His grave is on the outskirts of Hana. It's quite a drive to get there, and in some places not for the faint of heart. He hated the publicity that came with the flight he made and spent the rest of his life trying to avoid it

I always tell my wife our anniversary is easy to remember because it falls on Lindbergh Day. I like it but she's not amused.

Yes, he flew both Corsairs and P-38s on some missions in the South Pacific as a civilian. The (award winning) FG-1D Corsair operated by the Texas Flying Legends Museum pays a bit of homage to that fact, with 'Col. "Slim" Lindbergh' scribed under the canopy (on an otherwise 'standard' Pacific theatre three-tone paint scheme), with three kill markings, representing the number of Japanese aircraft that are believed to have been shot down by Lindbergh. http://www.texasflyinglegends.org/whistling-death-fg-1d

Considering Lindbergh's age at the time of WWII, and the general ages of those in the service, he was quite an old guy at the time.

Thank you Vin for posting this thread! Just a bit less than a month ago I made a post in the FSX forum to mark the anniversary of the day that the 'Spirit of St. Louis' first flew. Amazing to consider that less than a month after its very first flight, Lindbergh was setting off across the Atlantic with it (having first just crossed the United States). The aircraft would be retired almost exactly a year later from that first flight, having only ever been piloted by Charles Lindbergh - with the exception of a short flight that Lindbergh's good friend Bud Gurney made with the aircraft shortly after Lindbergh had returned from the Atlantic flight, so that Bud could see how she handled (Bud had done some barnstorming with Lindbergh in the early 20's (as depicted in the Jimmy Stewart movie)).
 
It was always a thrill to go to the National Air And Space Museum in DC to look at That Plane.Now a glorified hanger queen.Looking around that Fantastic place,it well may Be The "Spirit Started It All"..Can only guess at Charles Lindbergh thoughts seeing it hanging there!..Glad the story of this Man and Event lives..Its men like you who still feel Magnificence of it...Thank You....Some Memories here,While Volumes exist about this ,its good sometimes to review....Again Thanx John!....Vin!

Beana - your post reawakened a memory that had gone dormant - my father told me that as a child he had been to an air show near Detroit, where the old Detroit Race Course used to stand, which has since (last time I checked) been turned into a Meijer's Thrifty Acres. During the show, one of the aircraft experienced difficulties and crashed to the ground, killing the pilot. My father remembered Col Lindbergh dropping a wreath from the Spirit over the flier's funeral a couple of days later. This would place the event in 1927. He actually had the experience of seeing the aircraft in flight with Lindbergh at the controls.

the fact the atlantic had been flown several times before Lindbergh is of little consequence then? (for the record, Lindbergh was the first to fly across the atlantic solo, not first to fly the atlantic :engel016:)
 
Seems facts get altered in time,No Columbus did not Discover America,No Lindbergh Was not First,,No the Wright Bros were not First,and on and on..Some Question Niel Armstrong being First On The moon...All could be in question, But for Most ,its not.Its A Leap of Faith, Tradition! Almost no information on his 'exile' in europe after his sons kidnapping & no info on his ownership of a Miles Mohawk in which he did a lot of long distance flights, India, Moscow for example in 1937, 38 & 39. That aircraft has now been rebuilt & is on show in the RAF Museum & Hendon.

whilst true in some case, i suggest in this case you pick up a history book .. on the night of the 14th/15th June 1919, Captain John Alcock and Lieutenant Arthur Whitten Brown flew across the atlantic in a Vickers Vimy and claimed the Daily Mails £10,000 prize, both men were knighted as well.

Also due credit must go to the US crews who flew the 3 NC seaplanes across the atlantic in stages via the azores (also in 1919).. and a load of US navy boats lined up in positions along the way so the flying boats could keep track of where they were (roughly)

As i said, he was the first to do it solo, not the first to do it :)

no offence beana but you might want to take that tin foil hat off for a second or two, no ones saying he didnt fly the atlantic solo or any of the other stuff he did, just saying he wast the first to fly the atlantic like you implied in your first post.

Yes RD,I agree recognizing others have their heros and facts...But This was dedicated to Charles Lindbergh. Certainly this is an all inclusive forum.If One wants to remember,inform,share,This is the place,So Start yer own thread, ,Participate in the Posting ,doing two things.one, make this place more interesting ,and Two telling ,ones story..We here are an Internationale Place.I find it great to hear other Hero's and storys world wide..However ,I would Never go to the "A-B" thing,Classy it is not This is no Football game Compression,.. That was A World contest,Lindbergh Alone won it,Winning is every thing ,Comes with it is Fame,Glory,Legend....And it not to be challenged .Saying That its HOT in the Boneyard.and The Juices needed flowing...Ya Know What ? its still fun.
