One for the computer wizards out there

Since most of us have computers now that are far more advanced than those around when this game was released, I thought I'd propose the following idea:

It seems to me that using the current Windows voice/speech recognition software it might be possible to use verbal commands with the phonetic alphabet and a mike to control wingmen. By mathing the verbal "Romeo" with the keyboard letter R you could have your wingmen form up, or using "Alpha" order them to A = attack etc. for Hotel and Sierra.

Has anyone ever tried this?

Hi SW7,
It's a nice idea, be great if it could work. One major problem is that although computers have come a long way, CFS2 is 10+ years old.

The FSUIPC.dll is one way to interact with CFS2, but limited. I've not heard of voice activation being tried in this sim, I believe the Fs series does......

Cheers Shessi

There are several third-party voice/speech recognition software proggies out there that can do this. You can map key commands to voice prompts. I have an old fav called "Game Commander" which works for almost any sim or game. It lets you create separate profiles for each game, much like the software interface that comes with most joysticks. But it requires lots of voice training to learn your voice and you will still get an occassional miss. I once used it a lot with my Jane's jet sims, but with all the yellin' i ended up playin' behind closed doors in my house to keep the noise down, LOL...

That's something like I had in mind. Using a hotkey on the joystick could engage the software. Saying "Alpha" would cause the softwear to "type" "A" and wingmen would follow the keyboard instructions. This could free up several controller buttons for other functions. I'm thinking it might be feasible for simple commands like: Golf = G = gear; Foxtrot = F =flaps, Whiskey = W = WEP. The lazy dog that I am (blind too) I hate reaching past my stick to execute in the heat of action functions. :typing:

I downloaded a voice thing called VR Commander for $9.94. You can probably still find that. I thought I would use it in Fighter Ace while doing bombing missions where you have to make small adjustments on the run over the target. As others have mentioned though, the software is all a bit quirky as it takes into account accents and voice pitch. You also WILL feel stupid taking to the computer, especially if you are over 50. Might be worth leaving it until Logitech release their flightsim keypad. You could probably put that closer to you than your keyboard.
