Sad comment on our times ...

Makes me ashamed to read it happened in Canada. They should 'name and shame' the perp so that everyone can let him know what they think of his actions.

It is sad to say, but I believe this happens a lot more than we know about, and am sure the frequency will increase, as a result of the failing economies. NC

I rode my bicycle for years living in the Florida panhandle. Had never a worry in this regard, but had a few close calls but they were always due to people simply not paying attention. But, when I moved to Las Vegas, NV then I could see a vast difference in people, and for the sadder! Riding my bike in a true bike lane (meaning marked as such) I had something happen several times that had never happened before. I noticed drivers passing me and then swinging away from me AFTER they passed me!

Now, I noticed prior to that day, back in Florida, people would pass me and then after passing me would swing back into the lane. This meant that when they passed me they had first swung wide to give more room to avoid hitting me. I certainly always do that when approaching someone on a bike. What I noticed during that first ride in Las Vegas is people who deliberately swung toward me, passed me close as they dared to get, and then after having passed me, returned to their normal position in the lane! A few got close enough where I literally felt the heat of their engines radiating out the side body panels of their cars!

It was like they were determined to "send a message" that they didn't like me sharing the road with them even though I was actually inside a bike lane marked on the right shoulder of the road! There was plenty of room, so to see people do this was alarming. It was also immediately a very sad commentary on the dregs of society in such an urban area like Vegas where so many people would do something so deliberately dangerous to another person's life and health.

A few times the local news media would report of a bicyclist who was struck by a car and the driver charged. I guessed that these were the sorts that tried to send me their so-called message, and that final time they miscalculated and got too close and struck the person on the bicycle. I also guess they were arrested because an eye witness behind the accident saw what happened and quick as possible reported it to the police. Because not everyone, nor even most people, did that sort of act. But, it happened more than a few times.

I can't even relate to such people enough to try to explain them. The best I can say is they are hopeless dregs who deserve to be locked up in prison for the rest of their lives, and when they harmed someone, or killed someone that way, ended up being put in prison for what amounted to the rest of their lives.

I can't even recognize Toronto as part of Canada anymore. It has become some 3rd world city with only a few Canadian visitors. My wife works for a survey company and called there for 4 hours one evening and didn't connect with a single English or French speaking (our two official languages) person.
