Fond memories

of the house I grew up in was a place I drove by as I was passing through a few weeks ago.
Dad passed away in 1990, Mom in 2002.

My dad was meticulous how he did things, everything looked manicured and well kept back in the days.
Passing through I decided to drive by the old neighborhood to have a look. Seeing mom and dads place in shambles like this brought tears.

The place should be condemed.

That open, upper front window was my bedroom. I remember many occasions I would sneak out, up and over the back side of the roof to where I could jump without breaking myself in the process. That shake roof was slick at times!
Little did mom know I pilfered her car keys and went out for a scenic many times. When it came time to go back home before mom and dad woke, (between 1-5AM) i got going about 40 mph up the road, and then put the car in neutral and killed the engine so I could coast into the drive without being heard. LOL! I never did get caught. And it was a challenge getting back in the way I came out. :mixedsmi:

Ole Boy, I bet you that your mom knew ever time you "sneaked out."

Yep, same here Ole Boy. Whenever I'm in the Bossier City area I'll swing by the old haunts including the homefront. Like your Dad, mine was also a yard/house person. Bushes trimmed, grass nice and healthy and cut. I remember when
he discovered termites had eaten away part of the front porch, he did the treatment and rebuild himself. We had a spacious front/back yards, but now they truly do look smaller than the "big country" I played in as a child. But that's okay, I can return to those days any time I wish by simply closing my eyes and remembering those days.

You may not can go home again, but in a lotta ways, you never really leave it.

I can't bring myself to go back to the house I grew up in, so many memories.. Wonderful memories! We used to entertain all the time, relatives would flock to our house.. I have seen pictures of what it looks like now and the people that bought it have just destroyed it, its gotten better in the last couple of years from what I have been told but to me it just looks like a big junk yard and isn't the home I grew up in anymore. Eastern Washington, so its always really dry and we didn't have irrigation water..

Here is an aerial of the house when we had it, that is my Green Plymouth Scamp parked out in the front yard with a for sale sign on it.. Wish I had kept that!

When my uncle passed away in 2000 my sister and I (his heirs) sold the 3-bedroom ranch house where he and my grandma had lived since 1957. I lived there too for a while when I was a kid. The new owners tore it down and built a big pretentious two-story house that doesn't fit in the neighborhood at all. Nevertheless I'm glad the old house is gone. I wouldn't have wanted strangers living in a place that meant so much to me.

Still looks better than the house I was raised down in Arkansas. Mom moved down to the family farm sold the house in the hills to a relative and it passed through a few hands until one of the cracked out owners took the roof off of the back of the house. No one has lived in it since and it's basically just a shell on the old home place.

I will never go back to see what the house I grew up in looks like now. It was a beautiful home on the north side of Indianapolis. Nice neighborhood, and I have wonderful memories. And even though I hear the new owner has really made improvements, etc,....I choose to remember as it once was. NC
