I'll probably be soon among the ranks of reinstallers again. Seems the ole boy got a error from somewhere and won't boot past the bios screen saying "load needed dlls for kernel". One of my coworkers just had this two days ago and he ended up going with a new W7 install so looks like I'll be losing most stuff, not sure if file recovery is possible. I might try reinstalling XP again if i can locate a newer CD with service packs but I'm on the fence on that decision given how close discontinuation of support is.
 
sorry to hear this....i fear this sort of thing myself...i wish i had the know how to help you.
 
If I recall correctly (there's increasing doubt as the years go by) you may be able to reinstall the os without a low level format of the HD.

Also, if you can find a boot disk, you may be able to backup all your data files and even flight sim settings.

I did this successfully with XP reinstalls twice, but have no experience with either Vista or Win 7 (yet)
 
Yup it's done. I can pay to try and recover files but I may have enough on a backup. I pretty much opted for W7 and hope I can get used to it. About $150 for the OS and $75 or so for a HD, and that's assuming my MB and processor will play nice which I think they will. Sorry but I don't know what a low level format is but it wouldn't accept a reinstall of anything so I guess it doesn't matter. Are you out there Hurricane? I'm grateful for all your questions and answers and for not giving up because of your FS snags and setbacks. I'll be visiting all your posts to help me get FS up and going in the not too distant future so with a little luck and a few beers it won't be such a chore. And lastly, what is meant by the correct version for the key I have? Was that if I stayed with XP? I'm looking at W7 HP 64bit, I have 4G RAM which is minimal for it but should be able to upgrade later.
 
Windows 7 has different versions like professional, home premium, ultimate. The key will only work with that certain version. You can't use a professional key on ultimate, it's not allowed.
 
Truly a ghost in the machine. Sounds like a Twilight Zone story. I don't think the key thing is an issue as I will be getting a new OS, not a new key for a corrupted one.

A low level format means that you wipe the entire disk, with all your data files and program installs clean as a whistle, leaving a blank slate so to speak.

If you decide to switch to another version of the OS (I'm having good luck with win 7 64 home premium) then you'll have to let the installer do the format. In XP, you could opt to do an install of just the operating system without doing the formatting, which often cleaned up odd behaviors.

If you are considering a new OS, look at NEWEGG.com. Theirs are intended for those who build machines other folks. They are fully functional in every respect except that you don't have warranty support like you would if you got it from Best Buy, for example. You only need to promise to provide tech support to the end user, which I of course did.
