Ok, I know zip about SSDs, except they are reportedly much faster than conventional drives.

Now then, my wife has been pestering me for ideas for Christmas. The thought ocurred to me that an SSD drive would be nice. But recommendations would be nice as to brand/model etc.

And if I get one, what type of motherboard connection would I need? Thanks.....NC

Budget? Today's SSDs all connect via a SATA port on the motherboard. The speed of the port(SATA I 1.5GB/s, SATA II 3GB/s, SATA III 6GB/s}, is dependant on the mobo.
I've installed quite a few in the past 4 years, from many manufacturers. As of about a year ago, Samsung's offerings have been my first choice.
I use a Samsung 830, which is the C:\ drive on my rig, simply because it performed so well in a previous installation. So well, that when I built this one, I used it, and, I added a Samsung 840 Pro for FSX/P3D.
The 840 Pro is the only drive, that has ever crossed my bench, that actually exceeded mfg spec. Still impressive a year later...Don

Thanks Don,

Would it cause problems for me if I were to designate the SSD drive as a different drive than the C: drive?

And could I just add the drive, format it, and install Win7 with the existing drives still installed? Pete
