Ship wake effects

Dimus

SOH-CM-2025
We desperately need some talented developer to come up with updated effects for the wake of ships that would be compatible with the new wonderful 3d water in P3D. I spent the evening flying Dino's great new F-14D version doing traps and launches on the Nimitz. Both run great on my old rig but the 2d wake effect interlaced with the 3d waves make an ugly picture behind the ship:

These are ugly indeed - I ended up removing the wakes completely...

(and btw thanks for the appreciation for the F-14D!)

Wakes can be difficult. I have heard of people having these go straight up into the sky instead of behind the ship.

Maybe direct the question or request to the team at Prepar3D. They might be able to quickly figure out a way, or already have.

I'm sure the frame rate impact would be off the charts, but just imagine if pitching and rolling could be possible (rough seas), along with waves crashing over the bow!

Ugh, I feel sick! That would be pretty cool though, would it not!

Ian.

I am pretty sure the wake effect has been discussed on the Prepar3d forums as one of the things that needs attention. Lets hope so anyway.

It has been brought to their attention already. I just posted this here in case I stirred the appetite of one of our talented crowd of devs.

Chief, being a naval architect by profession, I assure you that making the ship respond accurately to the waves is extremely cpu intensive. Just a general effect, but not accurate should be easier. The old Il-2 1946 sim already has such an effect, which is scalable based on the weather condition.

Oh, I am sure the effects on a CPU would be intense. But it doesn't hurt to dream, eh? I am not familiar with any of the effects in IL-2, but anything which improves the wake effect would be welcome:very_drunk:

I don't think there's an easy way to modify what is a 2D effect to fit on the 3D water surface*, the only option might be to raise it just above the water surface but that would probably look odd on finals when you'd be able to tell.

*Without LM changing the code.
