I am having trouble with my system and it has been suggested by the makers that I convert to Windows XP64.

I appreciate that this is covered by the very first item on your FAQs for PS but it is not clear whether it will work on both XP64 AND Vista64.

Can you please confirm that P3 will indeed run on XP64?

No, do not get XP 64 for OFF - it is NOT tested.

Vista 64 yes. XP 64 no. (I am surprised they suggested that -driver support for XP 64 is generally poor).

Sorry for responding to a thread that was directed at others, but I felt this might be useful info.

I did successfully run XP 64Bit with OFF Phase 2. Just have to redirect the dreaded DLL to C:\WINDOWS\WOWSYS64 when registering it. Dunno if you'd have the same succes with P3.....but I imagine it would work.

I'm certainly not recommending you change to that operating system in this instance though, as I wouldn't normally recommend it at all.

Frankly, I'm a bit out of my depth here and am being asked to make decisions that I am not qualified to make.

From advice I am receiving from various helpful quarters it seems that I might be better going for Vista64 to take advantage of the full power of the hardware. Do you agree? :help:

My system, which does not appear to be performing to its full potential is:

4Gb DDR2 800MHz PC6400 Memory

1250W Power Supply
Windows XP 32bit Professional

I am wondering about the effectiveness of the processor. I am getting any advantage over a single core setup, i.e. is 2.4GHz too low and am I only using 1 core?
 
The only benefits you'd see from going to Vista 64 on the current hardware would be support for up to 8 Gig of RAM on your specific motherboard, and DX10 functionality with some of the newer game titles. I doubt very much if you'd see any improvement at all where OFF is concerned.

I certainly wouldn't go exclusivley to a Vista based system, be it 32 or 64bit.....period. The only thing I might recommend would be to grab yourself another hard drive and go to a dual boot arrangement. It's not all that complex a project as long as you're reasonably saavy with PC's in general, and it would give you the best of both worlds. In fact, I've been contemplating doing that myself. The only thing holding me back is the cost of Vista 64....it's not exactly cheap, but hard drives are nowadays. At that point I have to ask myself the question "Is the addition of more system memory and the eye-candy of a couple of DX10 games worth that kind of investment???" In my particular case the answer is "probably not". Only you can decide, but in your specific instance I'd probably stick with XP for now.

One thing puzzles me quite a bit. What is it that makes you feel your system isn't performing up to it's full potential? That's a fairly slick rig you're running there. It should run just about anything I can think of quite nicely, bearing in mind that OFF is running on only one of your 4 processor cores and is probably utilizing far less than even a single Gig of RAM. A 64 bit OS and more RAM aren't going to help in that department....not in any real significant way. Bear in mind also, this is only one man's opinion. Some may beg to differ, but that is sincerely the best advice I can offer with any real degree of comfort.

I think there are a number of us eagerly awaiting Billy's next operating system rather than a dressed up version of XP, which IMHO is exactly what Vista is. One thing I do know. The taylor made a very expensive suit there......lol.

CPU core speed is lowish though 2.4 - more Mhz would be good for OFF.

As I said stear clear of XP 64 if you want it for OFF P3 - we do not support it - it may work but if it doesn't you are on your own.

Am sincerely curious why more RAM is not beneficial, and why OFF is utilizing far less than 1 GB. I do not consider myself a hard-core gamer, but it is sort of popular wisdom that more RAM makes everything run better. The video card RAM handles all the textures then?

I also operate under the assumption that multi-cores can still be useful (even if OFF is not multithreaded) if other cores are assigned tasks such as running TIR4, and joystick software, etc.

Maybe I know just enough to be dangerous... that's what my boss says anyways :jump:

I'm not exactly sure why CFS3 or OFF only utilize a relatively small amount of system memory. That's just the way it is. It was when I looked at a system resources log a while back anyway.

More RAM is beneficial, particularly on a lower end system with smaller amounts of system memory. The point of diminishing returns comes into play though, particularly on higher end systems with adequate amounts of RAM and particularly when it comes to gaming frame rates. I'd hazard a guess that you could be running Vista 64 with 6 Gig of RAM, and increasing that amount to 12 Gig wouldn't get you a single frame per second increase in OFF or a number of other games.

Multiple cores are beneficial in terms of taking the load off a single core where other system related processes are concerned. Once again, you're faced with the reality of diminishing returns....particularly on higher end systems running apps that are not optimized for multi-threading, like OFF for instance. Same thing applies to multi-gpu arrays. If the software isn't able to run in SLI or Crossfire, you might as well be running a single card.



By the way...tell your boss he's wrong. You know more than enough to just be dangerous and should probably be in line for a raise. Won't he be surprised when he finds out your next in line for his job ;)

Windows limits the memory use of 32 Bit programs (and OFF / CFS 3 is such a 32 Bit program) to a maximum amount of 2 GB.
 
I would like to thank everybody for their help and for assisting in finding a cure for my ignorance.

I now have my system back and it was indeed working well, Parky. I was just trying to do the impossible with BoBII with Autogen when I had every Setting turned up to maximum. It is indeed a powerful system and it is staying under Windows XP Pro 32 bit! :amen:

I only have one remaining problem. Installing SP3 seems to have turned off my connection to the Internet whilst still using Explorer 6. The system is confirming that it is wirelessly connected to my BT Home Hub Router but will not connect to the Internet. My wife's laptop wireless connection works fine as, indeed, does my cable connected "office" computer.

I have had an engineer here trying to wake up the Internet connection without any luck. It seems that the only solution is to uninstall SP3 which we have proved is the likely source of the problem. I'm a bit reluctant to do this as, BoBII is working well as, indeed, I hope will OFF Phase 3 - when the bullion van delivers it! ;)

I wonder if anyone else has had this problem with SP3 (the engineer says he has never seen this before!) or can offer a possible solution.

Granted, but that has no bearing at all on why CFS3/OFF uses far less than a Gig while it's running. I believe that's more due to the limited demands of the software itself.

There are also ways to overcome the Windows 32 bit addressing issue by way of large address awareness manipulation and 3Gb switching, although it wouldn't amount to a hill of beans where OFF is concerned.

If you are running ZoneAlarm as your Firewall you may have a problem with a Windows Security Update (KB951748) that is known to cause loss of internet connection.
If you Google "zonealarm and windows update issue" you should find a solution to the issue.
I had the same problem after downloading SP3 and was blaming VirginMedia until I decided to look into it myself and then discovered it was a known issue.
I ended up rolling back to a previous System Restore point (Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore) and then made sure not to install SP3 or KB951748 whenever I was prompted.
If you think this may be the problem make sure you have your Automatic Updates (Control Panel, Security Centre) set to download only after checking with you otherwise you will have the same issue.

I have spent nearly the whole morning with a very helpful man from India, trying to restore my internet connection. After his fruitless endeavours, he opined that the problem was that some other software was causing a conflict.

I have uninstalled SP3 and I now have an internet connection!!!!!
