Navy P3 to P8 change

Just curious if anyone knows why the successor to the P-3 wasn't P-4, they skipped over a few numbers all the way to P-8.
How did that happen :dizzy:
 
Interesting question. Did some "googling" and found:

The Consolidated PB4Y Privateer was re-designated P-4 in 1962
The Martin P5M Marlin was re-designated P-5 in 1962
The P-7 was Lockheed's successor to the P-3, but they didn't get the contract.

No idea what happened to the P-6, lol.

Thanks, after reading all that, it made sense (a little) I remember the older P4 and P5 series but guess they missed out on the P7.
