The pictures didn't show . But if it is what I think it is, slipper tanks full of beer attached to a Spitfire it was something the Aussie pilots invented and as usual the Pom copied it.

When it came to getting their beer the Aussies were very resourceful

In "Wing Leader" 'Johnnie' Johnson tells of how while his Canadian wing were in Normandy the landlord of the "Unicorn" in Chichester regularly delivered supplies of fresh bread, vegetables and even lobster to Tangmere, from where they were flown to France in an Anson. The story reached the press, following which HM Customs warned the landlord that he needed an export licence. The beer-carrying Spitfire is also mentioned, together with the picture from the post above, captioned "Our version of the brewer's dray."

Such resourcefulness wasn't just limited to wartime. You'd be amazed at what got carried in a Vulcan's bomb bay.

Yep, just like we did when we built a replica of the Australian ship Endeavour, then never stopped banging on about it!

I believe this was comman practice with most sqn/wings after they moved over the channel. The Norwegian sqns of No 132 (Nor) wing of the 2 TAF certainly did it..lol

I will admit to knowing of two cases of Portuguese Rose Matuse 'imported' in the bomb bay of a P-3.

IIRC the same thing was done with cases of Coke by the Marines in the Pacific during WWII
